I will use windows as long as I can. If it goes to something I don't like, then I will adjust. As long I can work with my desktop wallpaper, I will be happy.

And it is true that I had to make a MS account to activate my new laptop, I called and the MS tech said I had to.

...Fine, then don't use Windows 8.0, 8.1, or Windows 10. Switch to another operating system that meets your requirements. What's so hard about that?
And what else is there? Apple, who is just as bad? Linux, which won't run advanced productivity programs?
    What are advanced productivity programs?
For me, the two main ones are Adobe Acrobat Standard and Finale music notation; there are no Linux equivalents. The driver for my sound card won't run on Linux. I depend heavily on an old Windows photo editing program that has a better auto color correction feature than any other I've seen (I'm color blind). One others would use would include professional 3D CAD programs, etc.

Thanks, advanced productivity programs was a bit ambiguous. You have some requirements that Linux doesn't support (I haven't researched any of your requirements).

The blanket statement threw me off and as Jimbo45 points out doesn't necessarily apply in most many cases.

I'm not sure about professional 3D CAD though, there might be some available, I never looked. I do use CAD, but haven't on Linux Mint ... yet. Some Open Source are nearly as good as the professional.

Thanks again, yes there are some things that you can't run on Linux and there are some things that don't have suitable alternates. It depends on your requirements, I've found Open Source versions for the things I require.

If you can't run the things you want/need to run on Linux, then it is not the OS you want on your machine. No argument there Lady Fitz.

This turned out to be quite the thread, Wolfgang.
    .....
After seeing Brink's thread on the January release, I wonder how much of this conversation will be relevant.

Still it is an interesting conversation on many things.

This was a new one for me, until I learned that it is the Kingston Office suite.
About Kingsoft Office and WPS Office

I use the Kingston suite on my seldom used tablet and it's very good for my needs. I suppose I should fire up the tablet and get an update, eh.

    Thanks Jim.

I'm sorry, but the 'tech' is wrong! Check in Control Panel or PC Settings for an option to activate by phone, if not, call them back and tell them you would like to activate your PC by Phone.

There is no difference, I am still being forced to do what MS says. Why would I give them my phone number, it's far more important than an email addy. I would still be tied to MS.

You don't have to give them your phone number! Activation by phone means you phone them up and type in some numbers. They then give you the activation code. Sometimes this is by robot, sometimes a real person. They don't ask for your phone number.

I think the thread has drifted again, from the op's title and post?
