    Install win 10 x64 on a 40 GB HDD?

Hi is it a good idea to install windows 10 x64 bit on a 40 GB HDD? I know that the minimum HDD space requirement is 20 GB. I'm planning to only use that drive for OS/updates only and programs will be installed someone else. I want to see if my computer is able to handle windows 10.

You will be constantly running out of drive space. 40GB is not large enough. 80GB you can get by with but I would recommend 120 as a minimum. Even then you need to mange your usage and keep the drive clean of accumulated temp and junk files.

Can I ask how you know this? On my 32gb tablet I have 12.2 GB free out of 29.9 GB and Windows 10 is running great. Of course it is 32 bit Windows 10 running in 2 GB of RAM.

40GB is fine to install Windows 10. I am running Windows 10 pro 64bit, fully functional ie. I have a lot of applications installed such as MS Office 2013, Abode Photoshop CC, Corel Paintshop X8, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Power DVD 15, Power Director 14, Techsmith Camtasia etc... and it only took ~30GB. With 64 bit, it will take more space since it also has WinSxS (~6GB) so what @NavyLCDR mentioned above for 32 bit is about right.

I can confirm too that Windows 10 32-bit is OK with a 40GB disk (I run it in VMWare) but for 64-bit you may need 10GB more, so you risk running out of space. I would try it though.

It depends on your settings as well, like I have pagefile and hibernation disabled on mine 40GB.
I have 25GB free, but I regularly clean it with CCleaner, WiseCare and some Windows commands.
Note, that system restore will be disabled by default, you will have to enable it, if you want to use it.

    40GB is ample.

My windows partition is 22.5GB. Including page file (1.4GB) my (64 bit) Windows install is 11GB. (I have set the OS to compact state). This is fine for normal running but to upgrade to 1511 version I had to remove all store apps and temporarily disable the page file so there was enough free space. I have Office 2010 and various other small programs installed. User folders are relocated.

VMs I always make in 20GB VHDX (so I have room for them to expand if native booted). Without Office they are about 5.5GB for 32 bit and 7GB for 64. This is after compressing the OS, removing the 800MB of store apps, reducing the pagefile size to 200MB and disabling hibernation.

I was talking about the space you need for 32-bit without any modifications or compressing the installation.

32 bit clean install of 1511 with all apps updated and no modifications or other software installed is 11.6GB (including 1.4GB page file). Just did one funnily enough :)

kk thanks y'all!. I would install 32 bit, but my computer has 8 GB of ram, so it wouldn't be that good.
Anyways, i managed to install it and after installing 1 update and AMD CCC, window uses 17.2 GB and now i have 19.9 gb left. I will try the things u have mention in order to reduce space.
