We couldn't update the system reserved partition

I have googled this issue a lot and I see a lot of things that can be done but I some are not working. My partitions look different so its a little strange. When I try to upgrade to 10, I get the error message "We couldn't update the system partition". I had an older SSD that like 120GB. I filled it up so I put in a bigger one. My computer says it's 465GB. and almost half full. I ended up using Samsung disk magic or something like that which copied everything from the old SSD and put it on the new one. I think when it did this, it created some different partition.

I added an image of my partitions. Both C and D are SSD's. C being my operating system.

I am confused as to which partition windows 10 is trying to install itself on and what exactly is on the data partition. If I right click on the data partition, the only option I have is to shrink the volume.

Shrink the Disk 0 C: drive partition by 250mb, adding the free space before it (take the 250mb out of the front of the C: drive partition not the end). Then expand the Disk 0 100mb NTFS partition to fill the free space making it 350mb in size.

How do I do that? I see that if I right click, I can shrink the volume. But you should remove it from the front and the back. I don't understand how to do that and how do you move it in front or back?

Partition wizard will allow you to shrink the C: drive partition and place the free space either before or after the partition. You want to create the free space between the two partitions on disk 0 (which will be before the C: drive partition) so the second operation can be expanding the 100mb partition to 350 mb.

The first operation with partition wizard on disk 0 will leave you with: 100mb partition (Data), 250mb free (unallocated) space, C; drive partition.

The second operation with partition wizard on disk 0 will leave you with: 350mb partition (Data), C: Drive partition.

You will queue both operations (set them up), then click apply and partition wizard will reboot the computer and do it's thing, then you can upgrade to Windows 10. It needs to update that first partition, but can't because there is only a few mb's free on it.

well, I tried the tool and it failed. it labels the partitions as Disk1 and Disk2 in the tool I decreased C: as much as it would let me which came to 243.93 which did show 221.7GB of Unallocated space between the Data partition and the C partition. Then I clicked on the Data partition and increased it as much as it would let me so that gave me 221.8 of data. It got about 10 percent of the way through the entire process and then error out. It said error 24, press any key to restart. It then restarted back to windows.

You confused Gigabytes (GB) with Megabytes (MB). If you go back and read the post from the beginning, what was instructed was to remove 250 Megabytes (MB) from C: drive and add the 250 Megabytes (MB) to the data partition which was 100 Megabytes (MB) in size to begin with. That would have made the data partition 350 Megabytes (MB) in size with about 250 Megabytes (MB) free.

What you did was attempt to take 250 Gigabytes (GB) from C: drive partition. Now your upgrade will fail because you don't have enough space left on C: drive because you took 1024 times as much space out of it as the instructions said to.

Oops. Well, no one has ever accused me of being observant. I will try again tomorrow. Thanks for pointing that out

well, the partition move worked this time. It's amazing what happens when you do it right. Windows is now downloading. This is farther than I have ever gotten so I have high hopes. Thank you both for your help.
