media CT upgrade of 7 fail SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION FTLMGR.sys

I used the media creation tool and did an in-place upgrade to 10 using the exact steps in the tutorial. It was doing the upgrade and proceeding nicely when I went for a break. After coming back it was in a screen loop of

    1) Showing Windows boot square on black screen.
    2) Cyan screen saying restart necessary and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (FLTMGR.SYS) then reboots
    3) Showing Windows boot square on black screen.
    4) Cyan screen saying looks like windows did not load correctly.

I can boot into Safe Mode with Network and research on the internet. I tried to do a Windows Update, but it goes into and endless (at less 14 hrs) screen with blue dots scrolling across. Get_WindowsUpdateLog file showed it was tring to possibly downloading drivers with 8024000c error codes among other things.

I had a win 7 Ultimate SP1 with minimal applications and drivers on it. BTW I had a NAS running on the network during upgrade. I had Kaspersky KIS 15 that I upgraded to 16 first. I also have a LSI 9260 RAID card that I updated the driver using windows update first.

Couldn't figure out next step. Did not want to reverse back to windows 7 without a good reason.

Any help would be most welcome.

PS : I used the media creation tool because I had no GW Win 10 Upgrade icon and the gw*.digicab pgm just hung in execution also.

Also wanted to add that the main advice I'm looking for is whether to proceed down my current path for revert to 7 before doing any more fixes.
