    The log was empty. But all is well now. Discreet GPU is an 820M, btw. I had to do a clean install of Win 8.1 and then upgraded to 10 immediately. Completely avoidable if MSFT had just made installation easier than the pain in the a$$ it is right now.

    I've upgraded

    I undertook a number of actions, so I'm not sure if I needed to do all of these but here goes:

    1/ Unplug all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard;
    2/ Uninstall all versions of SQL Server via Control Panel>Remove Programs;
    3/ Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials via Control Panel> Remove Programs;
    4/ Within Control Panel>Location>Administration - Set to English (United States) and click both check boxes to copy to all accounts;
    5/ Within the Run command box, type MSconfig;
    6/ Under General select Selective Startup and check the 'Load System Services' and Load Startup Items;
    7/ Reboot your PC;
    8/ Run Setup from your ISO or Memory Stick.

    This worked for me.... Let me know if it sorts your problem out.

    (Remember to edit MSConfig again and select normal boot after the install works)

    There's no SQL Server or MSE to remove. Win8.1 settings for language are for English-US. I've tried various "clean boot" procedures, including https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135. Mounted the .ISO file directly, and from a USB drive. Can't get past 24% of the Win10 installation process.

    Just some things I have found to help with the systems I've been upgrading:

    Run sfc /scannow to check for integrity violations (fix if necessary)
    make sure windows update is up-to-date
    uninstall any 3rd-party antivirus
    uninstall any hard drive monitoring software
    remove any add-on start buttons like Classic Shell, Start8 and any other Stardock software like Window Blinds
    make sure all user accounts are "administrative"
    disconnect all peripherals except mouse and keyboard
    upgrade from ISO, running it from within the windows operating system you are upgrading
    don't let it download updates when it's upgrading - it can do that after it's finished.
    sfc /scannow terminates with no problems reported. Besides the clean boots mentioned above, I've turned off WiFi and then turned off anti-virus (Avast) and firewalls (Comodo and Windows). No hard drive monitoring software or Start Menu add-ons. No peripherals except USB radio for mouse when I mount the .ISO file directly, and add a USB drive when I try upgrading from it. I've usually installed without it downloading updates, but once or twice I have.

    I think the important thing to do within Region panel is to go to Administrative tab>>> Language for non-Unicode... then click "Change system locale" and make sure it's "English (United States)". That is the only thing I did to get past the "Something Happened" error on my 10" tablet.

    Btw, do you have the KB3035583 installed on windows update?
    (Win8.1 Home) Control Panel > Region > Location tab> Home location: United States. The KB3035583 Update was installed on 7/22/2015.

    @wpcoe
    I think avast needs to be completely uninstalled. I seem to recall a function ngtool.exe in avast now which prevents malware from disabling/uninstalling it, and it also has negative affects on upgrades (experienced this going from 8.0 to 8.1). All antivirus/firewalls, etc. should be uninstalled, not just disabled.

    Did you go to "Administrative" tab? Because that is the important part.

    Check it here: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...happened-error

    Uninstalled Avast, rebooted, mounted Win10 .ISO file: installation still fails at 24%.

    Did you also run the Windows Update Troubleshooter to see what's missing? I had to run it myself when I did the upgrade and that's when I found out I don't have the KB3035583.

    • uninstalled Avast, rebooted,
    • uninstalled Comodo Firewall, rebooted,
    • did clean boot,
    • turned off Windows Firewall,
    • mounted Win10 .ISO file:

    Still fails at 24%

    (FWIW, my desktop computer upgraded to Win10 just fine with Avast, Comodo and Windows Firewall installed and active.)

    I'm no longer getting the

    screen, which is what all that Windows Updates shenanigans relates to.

    Now, I am getting:

    Failed four different strategies to upgrade to Win10-somethinghappened.gif

    after actually initiating the upgrade process. Windows Updates is no longer a part of the equation, is it?
