When you ran sfc /scannow, did it tell you there were any integrity violations? If so, I would like to see that log.
Please type in an administrative command window

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

This will place a file on the desktop called sfcdetails.txt. Attach that in your next post and we will have a look at it.

Can we see a list of installed programs, to determine if any might be causing this? It's easily had from Ccleaner (free), if you have that installed on your system.

    Thanks.

[snip]I just uninstalled Dell crapware and resized the partition. [snip]
Please describe in detail the changes made to the partitions and what software was used to make the changes.

(just thinking out loud...the failure happens early in the upgrade process; wondering if it is failing to create the rollback option, because of partition changes)

I'll certainly try your method after windows update is finished. Sorry if I seemed irate. I've been stuck dealing with this all day!
    Hi xstrike9999

No need to apologise, I know the frustration!

I had tried a few of the items on my list in isolation with no success, except the selective Startup which was a first. It was the combination of all of them that seemed to work.

Microsoft 2nd line support - who were good in the UK on the phone (+44 344 8002400) - stated that between 25% and 37% was when the drivers were being investigated, so I would suggest focusing on the lightest boot possible.

One other thing - When you did the install, did you check for Updates? (I did on my success, although there have been comments from people that have had success selecting no to updates...)

    Regards

Resized drive C. PC only came with one main partition. Deleted Dell's backup partition which was taking about 20gb. I am booting with the cleanest boot parameters possible but still no dice.
Sfc returned no errors. Here is the CBS log.

Can I suggest you do as I did in post #20.

Boot into you Windows DVD (or USB stick). Install Windows 8 from scratch, format your HDD before the install. You will need your Windows Key at the start of the install.
When the install is complete let the OS activate, will usually do so in a few seconds over the internet.
Then immediately do the upgrade, and select to keep nothing.

That was the only way it worked for me.

    Good luck.

I upgraded using a downloaded ISO, extracted onto USB stick. Worked like a charm.

Okay, no need to see the log if it reported no errors. I hope the instructions from lafargeotte work! Will wait for your report. I'll bet it's the nVidia driver. What's your graphic specs? It's not in your profile.
