Since kb4051963 Nvidia driver hangs rendering my computer useless

I installed KB4051963 he other day because Windows 10 told me an update was released. Little did I know this update would ruin my install.

There is so compatibility issue or something that I can't figure out, however I believe it is will Nvidia drivers. There is no consistency to when this occurs, but basically whatever is happening, the current display on the monitor will freeze. No input or output is usable. Everything just hangs frozen. The first time this happened, my monitor contrast went from normal to completely black and the computer restarted, but every time since it has just frozen solid until I hard reset no matter how long I wait.

I updated the nvidia drivers from 388.00 to 388.43 with no luck. I even did a clean install (of windows 10) - but as soon as the monitor refreshed to set the new resolution, it crashed just like before (it froze when it was changing resolution, so most of the screen was black except for the top corner.

I do not know how to figure out how to debug this or get information on it because I cannot get a dump file out of it since there is no BSOD, nor do I have an ability to put inputs into the system and it is never consistent so I cannot reproduce it without having to wait until it occurs, and even then I would likely not be able to save it.

Not sure where to go from here because it basically makes my computer useless/untrustworthy to do anything because I could just lose whatever I am working on .

You could try uninstalling or rolling back the Windows update and seeing if that is indeed the culprit.

In my experience, what you could be seeing here is also an overheating video card, so it is hard to really diagnose. Have you noticed the display freeze happens when the video card is being used heavily, or does this just happen at random?

Hell of a coincidence if it is an overheating problem, but stranger things have happened. Check your Nvidia drivers to make sure that the Windows update didn't alter your GPU fan speed.

Other than that, rolling back the Windows update would be a good first start.

I've had it freeze while I was unzipping a file without anything else running after it was off for a while. It seems to happen during heavy and light use.

I'll try rolling back and see if it continues. Thanks for the idea!

Okay, so I've been messing around with a few different clean installations for a few hours, didn't run into any problems until now. KB4051963 was not downloaded or installed yet and this occurred. Really not sure what is causing this now.
