    Screen resolution

My screen is squashed. I have adjusted resolution & tried to update windows & drivers. I found that the
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series is no longer listed as my video card.
    I have found this:
    Microsoft Basic Display Driver
    and
    Generic Non-Pnp Monitor

(Did my jerk-son-in-law uninstall my video card, after I told him I was considering getting a new PC, & would give them this one??)

How do I get the ATI back in use???

Is the ATI card and actual/separate video card or an embedded chip on the mobo? If this is an actual video card installed....pull the side panel off and look inside the case to see if its there. If it's there....you can download the legacy driver for it.

Can you check to see if your comp is registering your graphics card at all? Just open up your directx diag and see if you have multiple display tabs and what they say. Eg. I have 2 display tabs, my built in graphics card and my dedicated one.

Same problem on my wife's Sony AMD Sony Laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200. Seems to have happened after some big Windose update. Circles are now squashed ellipses.

    Likewise...
    Microsoft Basic Display Driver
    and
    Generic Non-Pnp Monitor

If I go to Device Manager it lists ATI Mobility Radeon HD Series. Clicking on that then trying update driver gives "best already installed", but with AMD driver dated 25 July 17.

However DirectX Diag reports "Main Driver: basicdisplay.sys, basicdisplay.sys, version 10.0.16299.15, date 6/21/2006.

Ran Check for Updates, repeatedly, nothing.

I'm stumped! Any suggestions gratefully received!

I have the same display, each time M$ updates the system, I am given the basic display adapter or one that says it is for the 4200 but it is signed by M$. I have the original driver from my manufacturers site and have to install it using compatibility settings for Windows 8, then I can set display back to 1600x900.

Yep....that's exactly what I had to do as well with my XFX HD Readon 6790D.

I did an update to win10 (just b4?) this happened... theartfullodger has described the same problem... Also, I cannot find a system restore point to revert to... I get: "Windows Backup has not been set up." AND "Windows could not find a backup for this computer."

The only problem that you need to address is the display adapter driver...
