Black screen (with cursor) after Windows updates

    Hello all,

Today during my browsing with Chrome all of the sudden all of my 3 monitors just turned pitch black with only a cursor . At first I thought it might be a problem with the Graphics card since this is mainly my video editing PC that encodes a lot of video with CUDA assistance. But only two of the monitors are hooked up via my GeForce card and the third one is connected from the onboard VGA port and none of them worked.

I tried to fix the issue following any tutorials I could find online (they are basically all the same stating to fix the "explorer.exe" in the register. But non have helped.

Thus far I have figured out the following:

If I boot my PC with only my onboard graphics in use I can login and use Windows "normally". As soon as I plug in something to the GeForce card I cannot do anything. My desktop view is still visible on my VGA connection, but nothing I try to click can be clicked as if it was only an image or the resolution has changed so much that I simply cannot find the appropriate place to click - both of the other monitors are dead. Even right click does nothing, so it is basically the same if I boot my PC up with all of the cables pluged in.

If I connect just one of the monitors through GeForce' card nothing happens. I see the Windows loading screen for less than a second and than nothing only a black screen with my mouse is visible.

While I used my VGA monitor only I deleted the drivers for my graphics card, rebooted the PC and than for a brief second (until it was recognised I guess) one of my screens and the VGA port functioned normally.

Of course I also tried to boot up Ubuntu Live just to see if the Graphics card was OK and it worked without a problem on all 3 monitors.
So I am 99,99% sure that the issue is with some sort of updated drivers (I did not update but I assume it probably updated while I was using my PC), but I simply cannot find a way to make this function again.

I thank you in advance for any inputs on this matter, it is driving me crazy :)

Use only the on board graphics and one monitor.
The monitors working with Ubuntu indicates that the hardware is ok and that the problem is with software.
The best way to fix the problematic Nvidia driver is to uninstall everything Nvidia using Display driver uninstaller and install new drivers from the computer manufacturer's website or from the Nvidia website.
The computer manufacturer's web site is preferred.
Enter the computer's serial or product number and the operating system to view available drivers.
If you use the Nvidia web site be sure the "clean install" box is checked and only install the graphics driver and the physx driver.

Once you have a clean install of the Nvidia drivers connect one monitor and check the performance. Then if it performs well connect all monitors and report the results into the thread.

    Hello,

    thank you for your reply.

I have tried the mentioned, but upon installing the latest driver from Nvidia' homepage during the install I receive a Windows error:
Black screen (with cursor) after Windows updates-img_5829583f0410d-600x201-1-.jpg
And then it goes back to the black screen again.

If I remove these drivers again, and try to install the ones from Microsoft's update it's the same story with the black screen again.
I'm guessing my graphics card is having issues with the newest update. Is there away way for me to install older drivers for my card and, still receive other updates for my Windows but somehow tell them to leave my card drivers alone permanently?

Still have to try if it will work tho. But I'm guessing since there were no other issues before these updates it should work. Will update the thread if it does.

    THREAD UPDATE:
None of the NVIDIA 7xx GTX graphics cards work with the current driver (both the official one and the Windows one is problematic).
This is a reply I have received directly from Microsoft Support in my country.

Currently using 340.52 drivers, but the downside is that now CUDA doesn't work with most video programs so I'm still testing what driver version will work best for my card but this version is what the 7's generation came with.

Hope this helped somebody also looking for a solution.

Thank you zbook bo pointing me towards DDU it worked like magic.

    You're welcome. That's great.
By default Windows will update non-Microsoft drivers.
In some computer configurations the latest driver may cause bsod.
There is a menu to turn this off Windows updates of non-Microsoft drivers so that a driver can be rolled back.
For your computer is was not needed but you now know about its availability.
