No 1920x1080 resolution while using Windows 10

I found my solution. I upgraded to Windows 10 again but this time I kept my external monitor connected (the one with native resolution 1920x1080) and Windows 10 retained the correct resolution.

About an hour ago, after being away from my computer for a few minutes, I returned to find my screen blank. When I wiggled the mouse, the screen came back but my resolution was 1024x768. When I attempted to reset it to 1920x1080 the maximum option was 1280x960. I'm running Windows 10 Pro Build 10240. Until the latest cumulative update which I installed last night, there was no problem with my screen resolution (including all pre-release versions of Windows 10). I have attempted to update my device driver but Windows says it is up to date. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4600 graphics card but installing Windows 8 drivers from AMD fails. Running under Ubuntu gives full 1920x1080 resolution so there's no problem with the hardware. Any ideas? If this persists, I will have to revert to Windows 8.1.

I have the same problem with my Radeon 4500. Also the HDMI connection to my tv quit working.

I finally found a solution. In Device Manager, Display adapters, ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series, I chose "Update Driver Software" and then "Browse my computer for driver software". I then chose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". In the list were several instances of a driver dated 7/15/2015 (which didn't work and is probably what caused the problem). The next oldest driver "ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series Version: 8.970.100.9001" was dated 1/13/2015. Choosing the January driver restored everything to normal. Apparently, sometime this morning, windows decided to update my video card driver and this caused the problem. The current driver (7/15/2015) doesn't work properly; whether that's a Microsoft issue or an AMD issue is unknown to me.

You can also Roll Back Driver in devmgmt.msc > Display adapters > Right-click > Properties > Driver.

This has definitely helped me a lot! I registered here just to say thank you to you who gave this advice! Thank you very much! When I upgraded to Windows 10, everything's fine except that the texts are so wide! Solving this in windows 7 was easy because I just had to click resolution but when I go to settings, there's just two options for resolutions! So finally, I ran across this forum and updated my driver and then, voila! Everything's fine now. So thank you! :)

I have the same problem although at boot up it comes up with 1024x768 resolution, Going to advanced screen settings I can select 1920x1080 but it says it cannot save those settings. If I leave the system on, after a few minutes it reverts to 1920x1080 by itself and will remain like that until I reboot or switch on again. I cannot update drivers as all of it keeps telling me drivers are up to date. The screen card is an Intel(R) HD Graphics. Even Intel Driver update won't update the driver. Running 64 bit OS. Although not serious it has a nuisance factor and would appreciate any advice.

I did the free upgrade and had a lot of problems with video resolution. It kept changing from 1920X1080 back to a basic resolution. I could reset it but then kept reverting back intermittently. Some times every few seconds it would change back and forth.
I downloaded and installed the latest driver for my graphics to no avail. The only thing that fixed it was going back to win 8.1, so I will definitely be watchful of updates.

windows support remotely updated and said 1920 x 1080 was not supported and I would have to find the closest resolution. That makes no sense to me!
