Excuse my stupidity...Need help with PCI video card

    Have ATI radeon 4870 PCI Express 2.0 X 16

    Looking at...

    PNY Verto GeForce GT 730 1Gb PCI Express 2.0 X 16

    PNY GeForce GT 1030 PCI Express 3.0 X 4

    Are these two cards interchangable? Will the 3.0 X 4 fit/work in a 2.0 X 16 slot?

    Yes, it will work

Yes, a PCIe x4 card will function in a PCIe x16 slot. The slot will simply use 4 of the 16 lanes available, and the card will work properly. See Wikipedia for more details.

They both look like PCIe cards although the bottom one shows less 'pins' or contacts than the top one. There's no way either will fit the older PCI slots and the third type of card is an AGP, only looks a bit like the PCIe but won't fit the PCIe slot. PCIe = PCI Express. As for less contacts, gold for the plating is expensive, no point using it if not needed. In the grand scheme of things technological the AGP replaced the PCI [which replaced the ISA] and the AGP was replaced by the PCIe.

I checked the PNY web site.

    Their 1030 uses a physical PCI-E X16 slot, but electrically it's PCI-E X4.

PNY claims that the 1030 has 4X the performance of the 730. If so, the modest price difference would make the 1030 attractive.

    Just to double check, please...
    I'll get the 1030 if this will fit/work in a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3

    Thanks for you help.

I have a GT 730 but if I were you I'd go for GT 1030.

Keep in mind though, the GT 1030 does not support analog signal that's why it does not come with a D-Sub port. An adapter will not even work with it .

For anyone interested, it will not work. Per PNY...

Thank you for contacting PNY Technical Support.

By spec PCIE 3.0 is backward compatible with PCIE 2.0 however the newer cards are UEFI compliant and will not work in pre-UEFI motherboards. Unfortunately the motherboard you have listed is a pre-UEFI motherboard, regardless of the PCIE version GeForce 700 series or later will not work on this motherboard.
