My PC crashes after some use
Note:This is a huge wall of text (I don't know how to simplify things) and I would really appreciate it if you can spend some of your precious time trying to help me :)
I have a Toshiba Satellite L500D laptop that has windows 10 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650.
A year ago, my laptop wouldn't turn on. I took it to a computer servicing shop and they fixed it. Same thing happened again a few months later; I took it to the shop again and they fixed it again. Same thing happened this year so I took it to the same shop. They gave me a call when the initial display problem was fixed, but they said that there was a problem and a windows reinstallation was needed. I told them not to do anything yet and I told them that I was going to go to their shop the next day. After going there, they showed me my PC and the problem was "VIDEO_TDR_Failure (atikmpag.sys)"(this happened once at home but the problem fixed itself that time).
Anyway, they told me I had to reinstall windows to fix this problem. I was a bit skeptical on this and I asked them " can't you boot into safe mode and install drivers or something?" I didn't get a clear answer so I took that as a no. They installed windows 10 (not an original) and nearly everything was working fine.
After checking my pc I noticed my resolution changed to 1024x768 and my display adapter was stated as 'Microsoft basic display adapter'. I have this neighbour who has some computer knowledge and he said something like "probably a driver problem. I'll take it to my apartment and use DriverPack Solutions to see if that helps." I was a bit skeptical on this since I figured that why do I need to use a 3rd party application to download drivers. I suggested a driver installer directly from the amd website (link:Legacy) which I got from a guide (link: How to: Install Legacy Drivers on Windows 10 (W... | Community) but he was sure of 'Driver pack solution'.
Apparently the driver pack solution app fixed the problem and my resolution changed to it's normal 1366x768 and windows detected my GPU.
But today while downloading a game my screen started flicked random colours. I starved my PC of it's battery until it turned off. 1 hour later I turned it on and all was working perfectly. I decided to watch a YouTube video but then odd lines and dots appeared on my screen and my PC restarted itself. All was working fine so I decided to watch another YouTube video. Same thing happened so this time I decided not to watch YouTube and play a browser game. Same thing happened but this time it said the same Video_TDR_Failure (atikmpa.sys) and gave me 2 options:restart my PC or see advanced repair options. I went to advanced repair options and from there I turned my PC off. Then shortly before making this huge wall of text I turned it on again. Windows restarted correctly, but then crashed straight away.
So, is there a workaround for this problem? Would it be wise to uninstall driver pack solutions and use the methods mentioned in the link above?
Thanks in advance.
