nvtray/nvtweak - do people still use these?

Now that I have my Windows 10 64-bit PC mostly set up, I'm wondering if there's still any use or need to install nvtray:

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/nvtweak/main.htm

It basically opens up some additional Nvidia video card tweaks, but it hasn't been updated in ages now and I'm wondering if it would do more harm than good at this point. Does anybody have any experience using this with newer video cards/newer drivers on Windows 10? It does run on Windows 7 but I worry about settings clashing with newer Nvidia video cards and drivers.

Most Nvidia folks are now using Nvidia Profile Inspector: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details...-download.html I haven't run into any problems running it on Win 10, although I am not a heavy user.

Great, thank you. That seems to be the one to use since it's currently in development.

If you run NVTweak with older software, you could get errors at startup.
To enable full compatibility, it is necessary to disable the options that cause issues with your current setup. Note that the correct operation of the options unlocked by the utility is not guaranteed, and some options are available only in beta versions of drivers or with a Quadro family card.

    P.S.
Updated the information because the old link is no longer relevant

Nvidia and Microsoft have been on the warpath to stop people from "tweaking" their GPU. Like over-clocking and other stuff.
A great example is the rise of external GPU setups ( turning outdated labtops and desktops into power-houses tapping into
possible home-made render-farms. It is silly.

Point being the software might not work well with later drivers and hardware.

Overclocking is not being diminished, its a sales point that consumers are looking for when buying parts its also an area of computers that generates a lot of money.

They are stopping the external gpu thing you mention but that is not a correlation to overclocking, it would have more to do with planned obsolescence. They don't wan't ppl to plug a decent gpu into something like a core 2 extreme that is 16 years old and getting decent results.

You could plug a 1080 into a core 2 extreme hedt version and still play most games, yeah its slow but you can buff a computer like that considerable well if you know how it just looks bad on paper comparing to new parts but youd be surprised at what something like that can still do.

HEDT versions of platforms bleed over for a long time and stay relative for a lot longer. You can play basically anything on the example given except for anything doing RTX. You may have to tune a few things lower but for the most part it will play games and at that old of a platform you would want the very high end version of the motherboard like one that bridged into ddr3 so it can take ddr3 ram etc.

Past that then HT core i series era then many platforms are still viable if you know how to use them, so anything since 1st gen, if you have the very high end version in these earlier platforms then you'd be surprizerd you are not locked out of much things that you are not able to do and we are talking about nearly 15 years since 1st gen.
Yes on paper its all slow but benching vs real world workloads do not always correlate.

Yeah they want to stop ppl where they can because they make no money if ppl use components longer.

1st gen with a 3080 which on paper looks very bad but the resulting outcome already tells us there is more to it than meets the eye. This is what i mean when benchmarking vs real world workloads do not always correlate. Getting some very good stats there on a system that has everything agaisnt it.

When they are stopping things like external gpu then this is part of the reason why, they want ppl to retire components because they not making money if they don't. We also know that games coming out of 1000 man tripple a teams are not always 100% accurate in terms of optimizations, they are slapped together many times and it means an artificial hit to performance requirements many times.

The example is doom eternal a game that is very optimized and it shows when playing on a 15 year old computer that is buffed with a newer gpu.

Computers are in a dark place imo and we need a more grass roots approach. We need a company to come in that is not fueling the conglomerate and starts offering consumers longevity instead of a cycle that warrants replacing old parts faster as we go along. We are a throw away society now. so much of the old tech just goes right into the rubbish bin now days. We cannot sustain that model for ever because we only have finite resource.
