It has a X79 MB so the bios likely has UEFI mode and UEFI with CSM............ is CSM enabled?

The 970 may not have a fully UEFI Bios............. google it.....

Did you switch the UEFI mode on while doing all this in the bios?

If you hold shift and then Click Restart do you get the option to enter the UEFI Firmware?

The problem is the board is trying to boot in UEFI mode most likely and that UEFI GOP section hasnt been updated to support the 970, So what you need to do is make sure to use Legacy Boot for GPU (Enable CSM). On your board it would be under the BOOT section in the BIOS.

    1. Enable CSM / Legacy boot, I myself just diasble UEFI totally putting everything on Legacy in the UEFI Boot section for testing.

    2. Disable the on chip GPU

Your IPIWB-PB motherboard is indeed an X79 one.

I am running a 970 graphics card in my secondary system, which is also X79. It has an Asus motherboard, and apparently its BIOS is compatible with the card.

A little Googling suggests that HP may not have provided a compatible BIOS update. If so, that's a little pathetic. Your system is hardly out-of-date as concerns performance.

You have no onboard graphics, so don't waste time trying to find a way to disable that.

Pegatron has gone out of business I think , which maybe why no further Bios Updates, but not sure if OP is on the latest? or if there were any bios Updates?

I looked, but didn't spot anything on an HP site. Google shows some third-party sites that have BIOS updates available. Whether any of them are legit, I can't say. (If the site requires that you install their download manager to get the file, I'd give it a miss.)

I suffered a very similar problem to this when I upgraded an older PC from a series 7 GeForce to a Series 8. There was some step change with the 8 that my BIOS didn't recognise. The PC was the same generation as yours. The solution was to get a BIOS update from the manufacturer. It just depends, however, as to whether your manufacturer has offered such an update. Incidentally, we always used to consider a BIOS update as the last step in trying to get a system working, becuase of the danger of a failed update ~ which can literally turn your PC in to a doorstop if it fails. If you can not find a solution to this, then I would consider trying a series 7 card in the PC, since it seems to have been the series 8 upwards that have caused the problems. If a single series 7 works, then you could always get a pair and put them in sli mode?

    Hi

I'm just wondering if you uninstalled the driver before removing the GT 640? You must always uninstall the drivers first regardless if you're upgrading from NVIDIA to NVIDIA or AMD to AMD.
With AMD Catalyst and Nvidia all that is no longer true since about Catalyst 12.1 or 13.1 on AMD and I don't know when with nvidia . I've installed both drivers many times and nvidia again a few days ago for a new Bf1 beta driver without removing the old ones like before .

The new AMD Catalyst and Nvidia installers here remove the old drivers for you before they put the new ones in been that way for a good while with AMD Catalyst but sure you can remove the old drivers first if you wish .

Exactly updated and hacked bios are like hens teeth on HP PC and a hacked BIOS or any BIOS flash has a risk factor .

I have 3 HP PC in use (5) total ,2 broken or retired if you count the 6 core ,6 yr old one that fried it's mainboard last week and the faster new one in my specs and the HP P4 rig from the Pentium 4 dark ages I bought new then no longer in use in the storage bld. and this brand new test mule /driver in my spec.

I told the OP almost the same thing and suggested GTX 680 that will more likely work in his PC and will play the new games at 1080p ** real well . We have an nvidia G Force GTX 680 playing the BF1 beta and the newer games and sims real well at 1080p** in an 2011 HP Pavilion P6 -S.B. Core i7 .

7 series nvidia cards won't post in the P7 PC but they may in the OP's PC with enough wattage with the 9 series cards not usually working at all .

Again The 7 series and up cards will not post at all in my HP P7 PC even with the 650W PSU in there without a new mainboard and if I upgrade the P7 GTX 680 d/GPU it will have to have a newer aftermarket mainboard if you can still find something decent for a S.B. Core i7 that isn't used or NOS

Those HP Pavilions and P6,P7 and some newer OEM PC often wont go above 6 -7 series Nvidia cards and 6 series on the P6 his problem IMO is either insufficient wattage or moreover likely the usual tattooed HP custom OEM BIOS conflicting with that card that may fry a mainboard voltage regulator or melt down eventually ,hose his OS ,corrupt his HDD or something if it stays in there because of all that . The OEM PC is trying to spit it out when it's loading and he ain't getting the clue .

d/GPU either work ,post and load windows correctly with the correct BIOS on both ends ,patches and drivers or don't and if they behave like that one it shouldn't be in there and it may at a minimum hose his windows OS and maybe his mainboard like that also .a lot of the newer cards are UEFI only or cross complaint which can be problems with a legacy MBR bios or UFEI depending on the Card and mainboard BIOS version ,mainboard restrictions , compatibility etc which on an older p6 or P7 or other HP series PC and certain other OEM BIOS and OEM mainboard is very unlikely anyway.
HP and other OEM are notorious for not updating mainboard firmware for plausible upgrades even if they update them at all .

Have you considered presumably if the OP enables an MBR /CSM legacy BIOS /boot on an OEM UFEI /GPT configuration he will have to use diskpart and clean out the GPT partitions and re initialize and format his HDD or SSD for MBR /NTFS and reinstall his OS and data ......or are you talking about something else or just turning his PC into a doorstop or something I don't know or is OP PC CSM legacy BIOS now and I typed all this for nothing ? .

Nvidia 900- or 1000series wont never initialize cause you have NON-uefi mobo? as in its no go with that HP-computer. 600-series is the last legacy-cards they made.

That's what it is on my 2011 SB Core i7 HP Pavilion P6 PC here upgraded with an 650w PSU and GTX 680 and g27 wheel and real outboard sound in the game/ music room beyond that you need an aftermarket mainboard and a PSU in any case beyond an HD 6450 ,the CTO options or something like that, end of story ,case probably closed .
