After upgrading graphics card, Windows 10 no longer boots properly

I recently tried to upgrade my graphics card (Geforce GT640 to a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 970 mini). However, after switching to the new card, Windows 10 Home Edition no longer booted properly - instead of Windows starting, I would get a blank (black) screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left, after which nothing would happen. After initially having this problem, I had thought that getting into safe mode might help, so I switched back to my original graphics card to get into Windows and then followed the “Option 1” instructions on this post https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...a.html#option1 in order to enable F8 advanced boot options. I restarted my computer with the original graphics card and used F8 upon booting, verifying that I am able to access these advanced boot options and enter Windows 10 safe mode with my original graphics card. I then exchanged to the new graphics card again, and upon booting up the computer, I hit F8 in order to try and get into advanced boot options and safe mode.
However, after hitting F8 several times in a boot-up that lasted several minutes (longer than it normally takes to boot-up), instead of taking me to advanced boot options, it took me straight into Windows 10. Thinking the problem was somehow solved, I installed the drivers for my new graphics card and everything seemed to work fine.
I then restarted the computer, only to find that my original problem of getting a blank screen with a cursor was still an issue. It seems that the only way for me to enter Windows now whenever I turn on/restart my computer is by hitting f8 repeatedly upon start-up, in a start-up process that lasts several minutes (I guess that I probably don’t have to hit it repeatedly, but I don’t know exactly at what point hitting f8 causes it to go into Windows). Otherwise, if I do nothing, I go to the blank screen with a cursor and nothing happens, and I need to power off and restart.
I also noticed that I am unable to enter the BIOS menu on boot-up – hitting f10 instead of f8 causes me to enter a blank screen after several minutes, but this time without a cursor (I don’t know if this is important, but I noted that hitting ctrl-alt-delete on this blank screen caused the computer to restart again, whereas the other blank screen with the cursor is totally unresponsive).
While in Windows, I have used SFC /scannow and no integrity violations were found.

    My specs are as follows:
    Hewlett-Packard Company
    h8-1380t
    I7 3.60 Ghz processor
    10 Gigabytes of RAM
    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
    2 terabyte hard drive

While my computer is able to function by hitting f8 whenever I reboot my computer, I am concerned by the fact that I can no longer enter the BIOS menu at boot-up and that this bizarre issue of needing f8 to enter Windows may affect things in the future, such as if some future update requires a restart, and that this may affect that process.
Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help you can provide!

We had a no cuser only black screen on our 2011 HP P7 SB i7 CTO with a few video cards and an upgraded 650w PSU and I surmised it was the tattooed HP BOIS not recognizing the d/GPU until we found a decent nvidia GTX 680 that worked fine and plays 1080p ultra plausibly well .

OTOH the fail's never did anything at all ,no POST or BOIS screens or Windows no nothing beyond a fan or two so you may have something different altogether . OTOH a sagging 12v 6 pin voltage rail maybe ?

Looking at the CTO graphics options for your PC Maybe a GTX 7xx or GTX 670/ 680 ? The GTX 670 and 680 (* very close ) will likley run rings around a Geforce GT640 and they will play almost all of the new games including BF xxxx and drive sims at 1080p ultra or 1080p ** at plausible settings and frame rates .

My concern here is the oddball size of total amount of RAM installed....10 GB. OEM's only come with the standard size amounts....ie, 4, 8, 16 gigs of RAM. I'm guessing that you added some RAM and in doing so, they're not matched pairs/sets with the same timings/voltages and speed. Which could be causing your issue.

I'd like some more detailed system specs.....

    Hi Plankton,

I definitely did not add any RAM to this computer. I haven't added anything to it since I bought it four years ago other than this new video card.
What detailed system specs in particular would you like to know?

    Thanks for the response!

Maybe if you have the 10 GB Ram option try pulling the odd duck 2 GB stick so you have symmetrical memory channels although it may be 10 bit RAM symmetrical with a 4 ch main board but I'll leave that opinion to the experts here .

It will game @ 1080p ultra fine with 8 GB and at its age the tattooed HP OEM BOIS in your PC wont Handel some newer d/GPU cards (trust me ) and decently hacked OEM HP BOIS are like hens teeth so maybe look at my list and see what you think or otherwise maybe think about an aftermarket main board or at the least look for newer same GPU silicon familys on the d/GPU HP option cards they used that's what I did but it only goes so far like that and its all in Wikiopinion to see the silicon linage

    Hi

I'm just wondering if you uninstalled the driver before removing the GT 640? You must always uninstall the drivers first regardless if you're upgrading from NVIDIA to NVIDIA or AMD to AMD.

RoasterMen, I did uninstall the old drivers before removing the old card and putting in the new one.

Plankton, I have a 600 watt power supply.

Electronuser, I temporarily removed the 2 GB RAM stick but it did not change anything, and continued to go to blank screen with a cursor unless I hit F8.

Again, I am still able to get into Windows by hitting F8, and once I am there everything seems to be fine. The new graphics card is detected by Windows and seems to work properly.
The only issues I have now is having to hit F8 upon startup in order to get into Windows in an overly-long start-up process, and that I can no longer access safe mode or BIOS settings like I was able to before by hitting F8 and F10.

Does anyone think a Windows Startup Repair would be of any help?

Thank you all for the replies so far!

Nvidia 900- or 1000series wont never initialize cause you have NON-uefi mobo? as in its no go with that HP-computer. 600-series is the last legacy-cards they made.
