You still have to uninstall the Nvidia drivers manually from Programs and Features before running DDU in safe mode. This usually means uninstalling the Graphics driver, HD Audio, PhysX driver and Geforce Experience from Programs and Features one by one and some actually require a restart before you can uninstall the next one. Revo uninstaller appears to uninstall all of those at once so you can get to safe mode to run DDU quicker...
Another tip I can offer is to remove your LAN cable before uninstalling the Nvidia drivers. As soon as you uninstall them and you have an active internet connection Windows Update will jump on installing some horribly out of date Nvidia driver from it's library which potentially can muck up your new current driver installation.
