Windows update messed up my dual monitor setup (again!)

For my MSI GTX960 the latest stable build was 362.00. I get the same issue with every new driver so far where switching monitors (Win+P) results in an endless loop of the 2 monitors switching -even though I meticulously remove earlier driver versions each time.
Quoting myself here since as of this morning I have the exact same problem again after (what I think is) the anniversary update of Win 10 64x. To my surprise, both device manager and even Geforce Experience still showed the 368.81 Drivers installed so something in the MS Update seems to have caused the corruption.

After a full OS restore some weeks ago 368.81 was automatically installed and initially solved the quoted problem which prevented me from upgrading to anyting above 362.00. Until this morning I assumed the NVidia drivers were malfunctioning on my OS but now it seems a Windows update is causing the conflict. This is the 3rd time a Win 10 auto-update messed up something, the last one resulting in me needing to do a full restore.

I realise this thread is probably not the place to diss MS but given my earlier assumption regarding the NVidia drivers I felt it's only fair to rectify and blame who apparentely is to blame (MS). Downloading 362.00 once again...

Have you tried turning off driver updates?

You'll also want to do this below to disable having drivers available in Windows Update.

I only found out today you can disable driver updates in Win10 but I actually turned off all MS auto updates alltogether as this is the 3rd time in 6 months a MS update messed up my PC in a severe way. I just don't have the time or will anymore to keep troubleshooting each run so..

I managed to get a stable dual monitor setup again (after 4+ hrs) by using DDU in safe mode and manually installing 368.69 so I'm good for now.

Btw. My driver wasn't updated since I already had the latest (368.81) so it was some conflicting KB from MS. At least I hope & assume MS drivers don't override your original NVidia drivers when they're up to date nor mistake my 900 series for a 10 Titan.

I went weeks without a TDR in Windows 10, after the anniversary update, boom had it happen twice in a row, back-to-back... fortunately, my computer recovered without restarting... so something tells me that the Nvidia drivers and Windows 10 aren't doing so hot... so I ran DDU and installed the latest Nvidia drivers... so far, have had zero TDRs, but it makes me not even want to do anything on my computer, because I don't want it to happen in the middle of something important... what's odd is that I can play games for hours not have it happen ever, and I mean ever.

I set my internet connection as wired (for Win Home this is the easiest without group policies).

Supposed to be a Game Ready driver for No Man's Sky dropping today, but I haven't seen it yet.

I'm expecting a new driver either Tuesday or Thursday this week.

Yeah, I figure since it hasn't dropped yet, it will likely be tomorrow. Hopefully it will help alleviate some of the issues that people are having with NMS.
