I had to reverse the last update, causing 2-3 second screen blackouts.

Do these driver updates really make much of a difference? It just seems that everytime the wind changes Nvidia have done yet another update. With so many updates in short spaces makes me wonder about the amount of QA testing.

My old laptop still runs an AMD 6970m card with gpu drivers last updated about 4 years ago. Everything runs just fine. All the games I have run within reason well. My older laptop with Nvidia 8800 GTX has drivers that date back to 2008 in it and no such problems. It seems to me that drivers are pushed to accommodate game releases but shouldn't the likes of Nvidia and AMD be pushing the game manufacturers to make their game better and conform to their drivers rather than Nvidia and AMD bending their drivers to suit the games. That's why consoles are so much simpler. GPU updates are another those windows things that are risky aspect to update, things can get broken or maybe a game that we liked stops running as well/or stops working because of a driver change that was done to accommodate some recent release. A case example is a couple posts pack where the new drivers were causing black screens every few seconds forcing a rollback.

Currently I have the Nvidia 980ti in my desktop which came around October/November time. So the driver version in it is around 355/356 (I forget). So by my reckoning I'll just leave those in for a few years. It just seems to be a total overkill on gpu driver updates.

99% are game updates to keep up to speed on current releases. Occasionally there may be a fix mixed in, I think!

Most new drivers are released to support big game releases that require changes to the driver or simply the addition of an SLI profile etc..

Ok. Just seems that maybe the games should themselves adapt to the driver rather than the other way round. Seems one of the main reasons is SLI or Crossfire. I never use them so I guess that minimises the amount of problems I see.

This update does seem to be about accommodating new games:

Nothing stated about improvements/fixes for Windows.
