    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT compatibility

I'm currently using W7 Home Premium and would like to upgrade to W10 but I'm concerned my Nvidia graphics card is incompatible. W7 has offered an update for it but it screwed up my display so I rolled back to the previous version, driver 7.15.11.7620 dated 19 July 2008. My Acer laptop originally came installed with Vista and I only upgraded to W7 last year. Any help or advice really appreciated.

Hi, to me this is warning me your PC may not be upgraded successfully, yet there is a contrary statement.

It also states it is not on Acer's Win 10 compatibility list - maybe you can find that and check.

Now you can try it quite safely. How?

    1. Use disk imaging (Macrium Reflect free eg) to create an image (system image) of what you have now. That way you can restore your PC to how it is now should things go wrong or you don't like '10

    2. Download the Win 10 iso and create a bootable medium. That way you have it available. Useful. Save redownloading.

    3. Best uninstall your AV beforehand, and certainly anything used for themes

    4. Use it to do the upgrade (note: clean install is preferred to avoid conflicts, but you have to get it activated via your Win 7 license and I don't know if that's retail or OEM).

    5. Try it.

Now, I've learnt that you can upgrade older PCs to later OS's, and you may get the OS to run. But thermal management may be poor, because of the lack of completely compatible drivers. E.g. You need to check your laptop runs in Safe Mode without your fans running hard.

Note that Win 10 takes control of your main drivers, and you need to take special action to change them and keep them.

If any help, the lower powered Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT 512MB (not M) has had no problem with Windows 10 on this old kit - see my specs.

One caveat - the latest compatible driver for the 9500 GT is version 341.92, but a clean install of Windows 10 latest Insider Build 14328 found and correctly installed this driver on updating post-install.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I'm doing a bit more research myself and I'll report back if necessary.
