Thank you, jds63. That is very helpful, especially to know my Sapphire Radeon DualX R9-280X can handle the Samsung S34 monitor I am considering.

Your Welcome ! Like i said before any 2K & 4K monitor especially with gaming is going to work your Graphics card more then using a resolution like 1920 x 1080, so a better Graphics card can help. I only have a 2K Monitor and i notice with gaming it stresses the card more then with my older monitor with lower resolution and was agreed when speaking to my Card manufacturer on this.

So it seems as though I might be better putting the money into a more powerful (and system compatible) graphics card and then looking at a better monitor when the cash is available a few months down the line. A compatible new graphics card should last a few years (probably outlast me- ) and the monitor may come down in price a tad - yes?

Oh, decisions decisions. And unless I'm careful a new graphics card will probably put a new factor (or spanner) into the mix! Any suggestions?

When considering a higher resolution monitor, what takes priority or restricts choice? Is it the system motherboard specs or the graphics card specs? Or does it depend on whether the monitor is to be connected to one or the other? Or is it more technical than that?

I have a 27" Samsung monitor with native resolution 1920 x 1080. I play DCS flight simulation and do get a pretty good picture but wondered if I could get an even better picture with a higher res monitor. I was thinking of increasing my ram to 32gig - the motherboard will handle that.

The graphics card is 'overclock edition' - I think that may mean it's factory overclocked - I don't enter the realms of overclocking.
yes ingame higher res equals bertter visuals however it also uses more video card ram and has a much higher strain on your resources in your case leaving your settings as they are on the game your playing and increasing the resoulution to 1440p will most likely max out your vram and half your framerates , maxing out your vram will cause the game to stutter and halving your fps well thatll halve your fps . You could of course lower your graphical settings ingame to compensate for the loss in fps due to higher res but then your making the visuals worse and kind of defeating the object. that gpu will perform at its best at 1080p plain and simple 1440p (in gaming at least) is too much for that card

increasing your system ram will have no effect either way

I also thought this myself about RAM usage and seeing his card had only 3GB, i also knew about the frames per second loss having a 2560x1440 monitor myself and noticed this in game by monitoring FPS, but so far not too bad for me with GeForce GTX 970 with 4GB of DDR5. I again notice in game my card heats up quicker then in 1920x1080, but does not come close to max temps for the card and each game is different on demands of a card.

Thank you, guys. I appreciate your continued assistance. My son is going to let me know the specifications of his monitors and card and I'll come back when I have these. They are probably a year or two old but he has always gone for quality so we shall see.

My son's offer has been gratefully turned down by me- mainly because of space restriction and also because it's far better sense for him to retain his set-up as a unit and either use it himself later when he has more time or dispose of it as a whole unit. Anyway, I appreciated his considering the old man. But, onwards.

I am now wanting to try and enhance my immersive experience. I play games such as Witcher 3 Fallout4 MassEffect etc., plus flight simulation. I think I prefer a single screen to a triple - available desk space width is around 130cm.

I am not into over-clocking. My present monitor is a Samsung 27".

I either get a new screen now, say something like the Samsung S34E790C and see if my present Sapphire Dual x-R9 280X card can handle it, OR I get a new graphics card now, say, the MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G and change my monitor in a few months time when the cash is available.

I need a wee bit of help -any thoughts on my choice or which is the more practical or sensible option I should go for?

Please make allowance for my apparent technical ignorance- I can just about follow published technical data but linking it all together is not easy. For example, I can't see the resolution 3440 x1440 in the display port data for the 280x. It shows a greater resolution but is that a fixed resolution? Maybe it's really impractical to consider 3440 x1440 and I should stick to 1920 x 1080 with higher game settings. It must seem so simple to you fellows

Thank you for your continued help. It seems the graphics card option may be the preferable first step but then I hit Freesync/Gsync.

That 280X Graphics card is fine for whatever you want to do the only drawback i see for gaming is 3GB RAM, out of the 5 models listed under this 280X the only difference in specs is clock speeds, not sure which is yours. You have up to 4096 X 2160 Pixel for DisplayPort Resolution, enough for that Samsung . http://www.sapphiretech.com/productd...05911&lang=eng

That Samsung you want to buy is 2K listed specs not 4K. Either purchase of a new Card or a Monitor is going to be around the same cost, give or take a hundred bucks. What was the model of Samsung you have now ?
130cm of space going to leave you with 45cm left of space, not much space with this monitor on a desk,34" monitor. Look into 27" monitors in 2K or 4K.

Thanks. jds. I have the Sapphire Dual x-R9 280X if that's what you were asking. Its case says 'overclock edition' although I don't do any overclocking.

My current monitor is a Samsung S27E390HS.

In flight simulation everything is fine except for some cockpit instrumentation, which isn't as clear or sharp as I would wish when zooming in. Scenery etc., is fine.

My allotted corner of the room is not as tiny as it would sound.
The free space is after allowing for my computer.

Looks like the monitor it is but I shall sit on things for a day or so. Thank you for giving me of your time.

    Your most welcome,anytime !

Do not know which Flight Sim game you referring to, but did you ever play around with the graphic settings in game ? Nice Samsung still S27E390HS, which connection do you use VGA or HDMI ?

I meant the space on the desk mainly to do anything else on the desk with a little over a foot left in space after a 34" monitor sits on it.

Originally in your system specs unless you changed it i thought i saw this Sapphire Radeon R9 280X
    http://www.sapphiretech.com/productd...05911&lang=eng

Some differences in the specs of each of these even though they look the same, clock speeds, bit rate on the Memory Bus and Stream Processors. Making it better, but the same amount of DDR5 RAM.
    Dual-X R9 280 3G D5 http://www.sapphiretech.com/productd...C443D&lang=eng

So i might of seen it wrong before when i listed the specs to you for your Card.
I recently bought a 2K monitor i do notice as said before about how it handles PC gaming compared to my last monitor, but have not had any issues with playing games, like stutter, freezes and drastic frames per second loss. My card is a EVGA GTX 970 4GB DDR5. Good luck on whatever you decide !!
