Intermittent wrong screen resolution at boot

This has only started happening recently - every few boots, the screen choice between Windows 10 and XP appears with the wrong resolution. The image is small on the screen. If I select Windows 10, the full boot sequence continues with that resolution. However, if I select 'Advanced options' and then 'Continue to Windows 10', the resolution changes to the correct format.
A week or so back, I went back to a previous set point and that seemed to cure the problem. Then it returned.
Can anyone suggest what is happening?

it will happen when switching back and forth between OS's, same as if you swap monitors.

10 has been known to overwrite some files on Dual OS installs.

I never use XP so your first idea is not valid. This just seems random but is certainly becoming more frequent.

Why though does forcing it to start in Win 10 always restore the correct resolution?

I have already stated the only possibilities why it can happen. It does not matter if you are using XP or not. This is a known issue with Windows 10 when you have another Windows version installed.

Well, you did say "it will happen when switching back and forth between OS's", which I do not do. I have also isolated the drive on which XP is installed so, theoretically, I should be able to unplug that drive and run 10 alone. I will try that when I have a moment.
