Laptop has HDMI, monitor has DVI. HDMI can be connected to DVI directly using an HDMI male to DVI male cable, no conversion is involved, so no picture degradation. Alternatively you can connect a DVI-D male/male cable to a DVI female, HDMI male adapter, or an HDMI male/male cable to an HDMI female, DVI male adapter.

Only drawback: you get the picture, not sound, so you have to use your notebook's speakers or connect external ones.

    Case closed!
Now this is escalading abnormally. I have thought that I have figured out the problem for now. But until I fired up basic game like CS 1.6, and what I realized was that I was having terrible performance. CS 1.6 is like minecraft counter-strike and I am having like 20fps with AMD HD 5000!!! I thought that I was using Intel's graphics, so I played around and couldn't switch permanently to AMD. In fact, I even tried to disable Intel card from Device manager, as a result, game did not launch at all (error). So I concluded that AMD is not working at all. How can I switch permanently to AMD card? any ideas?

I am not sure, as I don't have a notebook with hybrid graphics, but I suspect that Intel is used for everything and AMD is used only in 3D graphics. This should be controlled from either Intel Graphics Properties or AMD Control Panel. Some games need files from DirectX 9.0c to work properly, never mind running on Windows Vista or higher (DirectX 10 or higher). If this is the case you must also install latest DirectX 9.0c Runtime (June 2010). After having installed that, have a look at the game advanced graphics settings. Make sure you run the game in Direct3D mode (to use AMD) and if possible select the AMD graphics adapter (if you have the choice). If you run it at OpenGL mode (if applicable for that game) it could be done from Intel, not AMD. I am not familiar with that game, so I cannot tell you exactly what to do. Anyone else? Maybe you should post at the Games forum.

Hello, guys! I am in trouble, just as many of you here!
I have upgraded to W10 and now all of a sudden my LG monitor doesnt cant see my laptop. I have HP Envy 14 and connect to monitor via MD-port. I attach my Surface pro3(on W10 latest update), Macbook air and all these devices work just fine. But my good old HP just doesn't. I have gone through all the steps that were previously advised here (go to amd.com-find your driver-install it) but that doesn't seem to work. I have also tried to install W7 drivers, and it too didn't lead to any results. HDMI connection to TV also doesn't work. It is just frustrating. Any ideas?
    Sorry for the bump here.

Same issue for me - funny enough, same laptop, too. I was just forced to throw 10 on my Envy 14 - annoying.

I've used this Samsung monitor for years, hooked up via HDMI -- and now, upon 10's install, it doesn't recognize it.

I've tried going to AMD's site - did the Catalyst Suite update, nothing. Then Crimson (currently). Still nothing.

How do I get my laptop to recognize my "external" monitor?

Yo, I have solved my problem by installing crimson latest edition. Now HP can see the monitor, and TV also sees the HP via HDMI. Now I still have a problem of monitor flickering now and then. Again, it's nice and smooth with SP3, MACBOOK AIR. But when connected to HP, it flickers. Workable but annoying. Another problem, that I suspect is causing the AMD, is that sometimes my HP starts with blank screen. No mouse. No login screen. The display lights up, fan spins. But nothing else. I force shut down and turn on again, only this helps. But this is extremely bad for HDD.

Try managing the displays from Catalyst Control Panel.

Hello! What exactly I have to manage there? To be honest, I have gone through every settings in old AMD setting app, and in new shiny Catalyst App. Nothing seems to be related/solving my issue with flickering and black screen power up.

May be I just report my situation here in detail and someone could show me the way where to dig:-)
    so this is the situation:
-HP Envy 14 with initially W7 installed board
    -Upgraded to W10
-Installed latest AMD Radeon Crimson edition.
    ----------------
    issues:
    1) When connected to external monitor display flickers. I am not sure if "flickering" is the right word - I see some kind of interference or horizontal noise on display. It is very weird, as initially when I connect the display it doesnt flicker. It displays the image smoothly. But when I load my processor (fan starts spinning) it starts flickering. But I am not 100% sure on "load - flicker" correlation.
    2) Black display on startup. Turn on HP, I see the windows logo for couple of seconds and then black screen. Its not turned off, its greyish - meaning the display is lighted up, but its black. I can not see mouse or anything. I tried connecting external display, TV - nothing. Tried to pressing Windows+P = nothing. May be its not the issue of AMD at all, may be problem is in BIOS. No idea.

If anyone have any idea to my issues, I will be very thankful to hear solutions or directions to where to dig further.

I could be wrong, but AMD is responsible for 3D graphics only. All other graphics come from Intel. Make sure you have installed the latest Intel drivers (not Microsoft from Windows Update) and then see if the problem fixes.

I had the same problem with black screen under Win10 on a HP 8560p with AMD Radeon HD 6470M.

The solution that helped was to trigger the brightness sensor for the display (Key Fn-F11).
Immediately after pressing Fn-F11 the screen reappeared and also after reboot all is working well.

Well I can join the choir
I tried to do a W7Home to W10 transition on my son's Laptop which is an ASUS N71JQ (same graphics card as in this topic) and I nicely screwed up the upgrade as the screen went black and I had no idea what to do. After adding an external screen I tried a lot of things to get problems fixed but nothing worked especially as the W10 was completely crippled by an "unseen" reset that I initiated after an hour or 2.
I reverted back to W7 and everything was fine again. Then I tried to upgrade the "old" native driver (8.something) to the latest 15.7.1 under W7 and fell into the same "black screen" pit again ... The system became completely unstable even with both screens attached. Seemed like the drivers were never properly installed even after a re-install (no clean up utility, I may lose the one working driver). I got screens larger than the screen size but at very low resolution, like a stretched 800x600 ... No settings for the native 1600x900 laptop resolution available !
I got the PC back on the old driver by uninstalling/deleting the AMD driver through Device Manager.
Now I have no clue if running the W10 upgrade will get me into the pits again, even after having read postings all over the internet for several hours and part of the night !
The AMD forum is not of much help either ...
Did you get it to work by now? I also have a N71Jq, and had to go back to win7.
