Can I use GTX 970 drivers for a GTX 1080? (troubleshooting)

    Hey all!

I currently have a GTX 970 installed with its respective drivers. I picked up a 1080 from a friend who said it might have some cooling issues.

To cut a long story short I was just wondering if I can use the 970 drivers as I will be swapping cards back and forth while I do tests. I don’t want to install and uninstall drivers every time I swap the cards. Is this okay?

I just need to see for the most part if the card is working or not. Will it cause any kind of issues for my PC or affect cooling?

    Thank you :)

The latest Nvidia driver for the GTX 970 also support the GTX 1080.

You need to re-install the drivers even if same version drivers when swopping cards as they are a different hardware generation and feature sets and will have a different VBIOS as well.

If you don't then your troubleshooting will be flawed.

You can install two or more drivers for anything in the computer, the driver will only load if the hardware is detected. So say you have a GTX 970 and a AMD RX560 and you have both drivers installed. If you only have one card installed only that driver will load.

You are not going to invalidate anything with your scenario as you are literally using the same driver anyway, Either way its fine and not an issue you can have ,multiple drivers and only those required will load. There is no need to uninstall anything each time either.

Thanks for your responses all! I'm currently using the 1080 on my 970 gpu driver and all seems to be going well. Just did a stress test as well. Now that I know the card is working I will go ahead and update the drivers for the correct gpu! <3
