    monitor help

    win 10 22h2

i had to put a monitor on my laptop to be able to see the screen better. i have a dell 24" but it was a bit thick and my pc screen did not fit well behind the monitor. it did perform well though. so i got a mtg monitor and flipped it upside down and reverted the landscape to upside down in order to get the laptop screen behind the monitor.

well i'm having a time getting the resolution. i tried every one and if i pick small on the 2nd number the screen get narrower and i lose half the actual screen. if i pick what window likes the screen is sow wide that not only do i lose the desktop icons but the taskbar go so far down i have to guess on icons. it might be a driver but i went to device manage and asked for another driver and windows said i have the best one.

also this screen seems to be a bit out of focus from the dell. like i said the dell preforms good but it is so thick i don't have the room on my little desk area to really use it good.

so maybe a driver will get the screen to be usable and also sharpen the image more. if not i will have to send it back. this is what i see does it look clear to you? it looks a bit out of focus to me. contrast is 50% brightness is about 60%

maybe just stick with the thick Dell monitor ,get an external keyboard /mouse and close the laptop and put the monitor on top?
laptop will function like a desktop box ...after you adjust lid settings .
sure you cant find like 12inches of extra space on your table to just put the monitor next to lappy?

thanks i have 18" from the wall and 36" side to side see photos. i put a 24" monitor in the back and slipped the laptop screen behind it. the dell i had i could just get the screen behind it and this screen i can fit the pc real well but it is not the proper resolution. now the best i can use is 1600x 1200 and everything is a bit short and fat. at the recommender resolution the desktop is way off to the top left right and bottom. i posted photos of my work space. the wife has one like it on her side of the kitchen table. we both have laptops and i built these table areas so we can set in the kitchen and eat and watch tv and use the pc. the display driver now is the amd radeon vega8 graphics. i do not think it is correct. thanks

    this is my work space

sorry think i misunderstood your OP,thought you wanted a bigger monitor .
if the external monitor connects to laptop with VGA, the resolution is gonna be offish, like mine.
    how is it connected?

ok i set the scaling to 100 and i did not do to much. it is possible the monitor is getting worn out. i really do not know how old it is. i did send an email to the mfg. and if they get back to me i will send the photo of the data on the back and see if they can tell. me and maybe how to get it a bit clearer.
the resolution is still 1600x1200 and things are still shorter and fatter. i may get use to it. we will see. if i can get the font a bit darker that may help also.

well update i think i have it. i was in the desktop and clicked on display and went again to advance and i saw refresh rate. i did not see that before or just overlooked it. anyway it was set at 59.5 hz and this was listed as a 75hz monitor so i clicked that box and up came some settings so i clicked 75hz and wow the screen came in as i was hoping for and it got clearer. so it kind of looks like the frequency has something to do with this issue also. it say it needs a 12vdc 2.5 amp power supply and all i have now is 12vdc and 2 amp so i have to get a bigger power supply and lets hope all is good. i did put a 3 amp power supply on it yesterday and that did not change anything and the 2 a,p may work good as i do not game so the power supply should not be working so hard. but i will get one anyway.

TV displays are not meant to be word-processors. You need to be far away. If you see lines and your close up, that is not something worth to own. You should not have to adjust frequencies or anything like that. It should just work.

For me I have my Labtop underneath ( out of sight ) and Display on top.

1600 X is literally OS7-OS9 standard before OSX was out. That being said many Monitors ( Tubes ) and Displays really was terrible at the time. Especially with the resolution the idea of a good looking computer display was all in imagination. More or less a word-processor or semi-window. I would be going into DOS world with that kind of stuff. We are talking about slick looking Flat-screens, but Bleeh in comparison to the later PPC OSX days.

I checked out the price and is $60. Your getting what you paid for.

    ..............

Otherwise resolution maybe your graphics card limit? Or your card can go higher but the display is terrible??? I have a Wacom Tablet 24" and honestly terrible but gets the job done. On VGA is terrible. Even on DVI is terrible. This is the earlier models.
I get the work done and could use it no different but in comparison to later models, terrible. I get what I paid for.

i paid 40$ it is working real good this is not a tv display it is a lg ips display lg got back to me and confirmed it was some type of gaming monitor. that may be a bit much for what i really need but because i have it setting on my small table i had to turn it upside down so i have room for the laptop screen behind the monitor.

when i set the refresh rate to 59.5hz i got that large screen when i set it to 75hz it shows normal so refresh must do something.
    thanks

ok i got it figured out. it turns out it was a refresh rate issue. during some of the suggested fixes i went to the display from the desktop and went down looking over the settings and went into advanced and all of a sudden the refresh rate was lit up. not shaded out as before. anyway i opened the drop down and it wa at 50.5hz and the listing and lg told me it was a 75hz monitor so i had that option and clicked it and the screen came into good view and the screen showed all the icon and taskbar came up into view.

so to test it i put it back to 59.5hz and it reverted back so for some reason the refresh rate had something to do with my issue. go figure. so i reset it to 75hz and it is full screen showing now and it is real clear. also it turns out the driver for this monitor is the one i have and the same one for the laptop per lg. so thanks for all those suggestions. sometimes they may not be the fix but lead to fixes. so i said if i got it resolved that i would stop back and let everyone know thanks much for the help.
