Problem running two monitors via an HDMI splitter. Advice appreciated.

I'm trying to run two monitors from a PC with only one HDMI output and no other appropriate connector: this is covered on many online sites, all of which recommend using an HDMI splitter.

I've set this up and it's working to the extent that both screens display exactly the same image, but Display Settings doesn't report the second monitor, even after clicking Detect. This is the case whether the splitter is passive or powered. I'd be grateful for any thoughts.

The PC is running Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.3803)

    Many thanks.

PS: Thanks to the mods for moving this to the approved area; I didn't think of my question as being about graphic cards.

In short no, HDMI does not support daisy chain and extension. Only replication.

You need to have a Split-Extender or to use Multi Stream Transport Display port if available. If you have MST-DP on your computer you can use a Display Port to 2x HDMI expansion module that supports mirroring and extended mode.

MaloK, many thanks for the speedy reply. Embarrassingly, I've just realised that the PC does in fact have a second video connector: it's not clearly labelled and I didn't at first recognise the type: it's a DisplayPort. I hope it operates separately from the HDMI connector, because if that is the case perhaps I can obtain a DisplayPort to HDMI cable and connect the second monitor that way.
