    8bit vs 10bit display color

There doesn't seem to be any display/monitor thread so i figured i'll ask here.

Has anyone changed from an 8bit monitor to a 10bit one, if so is the difference noticable, atleast i asume it is?

    8bit = 16.7 Million Colors
    10bit = 1 Billion Colors

    For comparison:

    One million = 1.000.000
    One billion = 1.000.000.000

That means a 10bit display has 983.300.000 million more colors than an 8bit display does.
On paper that seems insane, and i bet not only on paper but the human eye can see the difference.
Considering that many people are looking at displays for a while every single day it might be worth getting a 10bit display.

What i would like from a monitor is:
    144hz up to 240hz refreshrate
    2560x1440p WQHD resolution
1ms response time (GTG doesn't mean much, preffer MPRT measurement)
Gsync or Gsync compatible (is gsync-compatible worse in any way bc's no panel?)
Flicker Free & Low blue light
Paneltype (IPS, TN, OLED, etc... can't really tell which is the "best")
HDR isn't a must have but would be nice.

    Any recommendations?

I have not approached this from the angle of viewing different monitors, but I have a lot of experience looking at it like this:

I do a lot of video compression work. I can take the same source video and compress it to a video file that has 8-bit output and repeat with all the same settings except that I output to 10-bit video. The difference is HUGE! The place where you will notice it most is any place that has a change from dark to light as a gradual gradient. With 8-bit video you get distinct banding of the colors whereas with 10-bit video you will get a far smoother transition of the colors. It is so noticeable to me that I find it painful to watch anything done in 8-bit.

As far as I am concerned, anything dealing with 8-bit video has no place in modern computing / video

Thanks for the info, this supports my idea of getting rid of the corruent 8bit monitor i have and "upgrade" to a 10bit one.
But then there's the question, which one and that's not easy to find out for me.
As for pricetag i'm willing to pay at max 1000 euros but lower is better!

This monitor looks like everything i want to have but with one major flaw that makes me not want to buy it.

It has an OLED display which might suffer burn-in and that's likely to happen because i do use the same applications for many hours sometimes. Any thouhts?

Would you say a 10bit monitor without HDR is any good? Is HDR10 worth anything?

Sorry for slow response. Been ill past few days, just finally catching up.

I too have avoided OLED for the very same concerns. I have a phone with an OLED display and it has some really bad burn-in so that has put me off investing in an OLED monitor.

Besides, the non-OLED displays look plenty good for my humble purposes.

As for HDR, I guess that much of it depends upon how critical you are and what you are doing. My primary system actually does NOT have an HDR display, and it is fine for my daily use. But I have another system on which I watch a lot of videos and I admit to really liking the HDR there.

That sounds like OLED really should be avoided thanks to burnin, appreciate the info!

Non OLED panel is basicaly every other panel type, so when i'm interested in a 10bit monitor is there any specific panel you would recommend? I only have had a TN once and now an IPS.
It's useless thinking about the difference between a 10bit monitor without hdr and a 10bit monitor with hdr, would have to see it to understand it, guess when my target is highest color accuracy why not go all in.
But there's still the question of 10bit + which hdr certification? Is hdr400 any good?
Most of the asus gaming monitors have nothing more than hdr400, i've heared some people argue that hdr400 is nothing compared to hdr1000.

Lets be frank. The only displays on the market that actually are worth anything are literally big SONY displays with no reflective
surfaces ranging in the $10,000 price range. I mean we are talking about an "end all the idsplays" at the moment.

The thing about OLED or QLED is the fear of Pixel-rot/blackening due to the organic parts. Further more the technologies
where a display could "Darken individual pixels and still not have problems down the road is not there yet. LED in comparison to LCD displays are a bonus for leaving a smaller carbon-footprint ( Less wattage ) , while the LCD are sure never to burn-out or
leave you with back lighting that is dead, or LED that go out and isannoying to fix.

    So at the moment is

    A. LDC and pay deal with the 100watts

    B. LED and "Maybe" the led will not die.

    C. OLED where your might have the greatest image but pixel-rot/death could ahappen

    ...............

A final option that nobody is going for are "Short throw projectors". These could take up entire walls
for less then $2000 with the other $2000 being used for the matt ( whatever ideal white no shadows on wall ).
A short throw projector would do the job of a display with no problems.

    ...............

If not impressed by that then you should use a pair of Display-Glasses ( like the helmet thingy ). THis could
solve the problem as long as the light does not reflect on to your eyes.
