    To dalchina, Callender
    Its's not a laptop.
    That doesn't make any difference.

I have run the programs linked in Post #8 on several laptops and desktops.

As for Nvidia Control Panel - it should be available or installable on desktops. If you don't have it maybe wait for advice on how to install (if possible) and how to access it.

I'm using Radeon not Nvidia so cannot provide instructions.

If all else fails check settings on your monitor and adjust that way.

Just download Gamma Panel and try it. It's portable (no install).

Really these settings should already be available via Nvidia Control Panel.

I know that. I don't know why you think I don't. And thank you for your reply...

    Hi
I’m recently having cataract operations on my eyes and at present my eyesight is pretty messed up. I’ve been attempting to adjust the PC screen while my eyes recover. However, I’ve got into a situation where the screen is now way to bright & I can’t seem to reset it back to normal or default.
Generally... you can't adjust brightness when:

    1. Your computer lacks the right video drivers.
    2. When the drivers result in some incompatibility and this option won't show up.
    3. When the drivers and graphical unit (GPU) are broken... example: many NVIDIA users report loosing brightness control after updating their GPU drivers, this can happen manually (you installed a new driver or confirmed permission for the upgrade), or it happened without you noticing, like via Windows update, or Nvidia (whatever your card brand is) update software. A lot of people report fixing this just by going back to the previous driver, some had to test one driver at the time (going back to previous versions) until it worked, this might be tricky, and you might need special software to REMOVE some drivers, Nvidia (example) is well known for not working the same way installing from zero vs upgrading/downgrading.
    4. Your GPU can't access your monitor brightness controls (you are not using a laptop).
    5. And... your GPU might be dying, it's a pretty common symptom to loose brightness control, along with issues while doing to sleep/waking up your computer.

Try around what's described above and see how far you can get. Yes, you might try what @Ghot suggest (given you have an Nvidia card), or you might try an specific utility like gamma control or CAREYOUEYES, these things will allow you to change the colors and brightness of your screen, you will feel the difference!!!, but keep in mind, this uses the color leds of your screen to produce darker tones on top of your screen backlight, many of these tools can't actually control the brightness of the leds lighting up the screen.

In case you didn't know, your screen has 2 families of LEDS, one set is bright-white, and the intensity is controlled via... PWM (don't mind about it), it just affects the intensity... And the other set it's RGB, colors... and they just change what's on top of the white leds. When you can't fully control your backlight, the color leds will do some magic to produce darker colors, even if the white leds behind and it's intensity didn't change at all, this means your computer will still produce heat, and perhaps some sort of radiation.

My advice: try fixing around the list above, then add a filter screen, and combine with eye care software as needed, this will not only change the colors/brightness, but will also remind you to REST.

    Hi all.
Thanks for all suggestion. I've adjusted the monitors to 0% Brightness & 100% Contrast. It kelps a little. The Video drivers (Nvidia GTX 970) are all up to date & I've adjusted the appropriate settins in there. As for Gamma Panel & the other suggestions, it's so hard for me to read anything on screen that I've given up for now. Will try again after resting my eyes. Luckily I have an iPad to help, without which this discussion would not be possible.
    Once again, thank you.
(BTW, If anyone is due to have cataracts operations prepare for possibly weeks of major vision problems).
