    Monitor Issues with brightness

Monitor: Hanns.G iX191 - yes it is old. I bought it about 20 yrs ago.

I have got my brightness/darkness so screwed up (barely can see the tast bar icons) and have no idea how to fix it. On the monitor there are five buttons. Left to right: Power - Arrow Left - Auto - Arrow Right - MENU

The only one that sesems to do anything is the Power button. It does turn the monitor on and off.

When I do a search on how to change the brightness for Windows 10 here is what I get:

Windows 10: Select Start, choose Settings, and then select System > Display. Under Brightness and color, move the Change brightness slider to adjust the brightness. For more details, see: Change screen brightness.

There is NO slider on my Windows 10.
Haere is what I see in that area:

I see no way to make the icons in the task bar any darker althouht I somehow made the llghter.

There are some recommended software to change the brightness and I download one called Windows10 Brightness Slider. It does change the brightness/darkness of the overall screen , but does not change lightness/darkness of icons on the task bar.

That is what I would like to accomplish. Any ideas?

    Thanks

I sympathize with your frustration. You are going to have to navigate the Menu and use the Brightness function.

I realize it sound easier than it actually is. The trick is to figure out what each button does.

It's an old LCD display panel with a CFL backlight.
CFLs age and do not last 20 years. You need a new monitor.

That is probably true but the OP should at least try to adjust the monitor brightness before he gives up.

BTW, one of my computers has a 25 year old Gateway FPD1520 15" LCD (1024x768) monitor. The brightness set at 55%.

More information - A new monitor is NOT feasible at the moment (money is in short supply).

MisterEd, What is OP? I went to that link, my monitor is NOT listed, but I looked at some of the manuals that were close. None gave me a solution to what I am looking for.

Here are some of the operating parameters for monitor:

    Desktop resolution 1280 x 1024
    Active signal resolution 1280 x 1024
    Refresh rate (Hz) 60.020 Hz
    Bit depth 8 bit

BTW I held each of the control buttons on the monitor for at least 15 seconds and like I said before, they don't do anything that I can tell except the power button.

I also went to the local Goodwill store. I picked up ($6.00) a small monitor for an old PC I have and it work fine on that old PC.

    Have a great day.

The reference given does have your Monitor's User Manual.
It shows how to use the Menu to access various controls, one of which is Brightness, return to defaults etc.

Navigating OSD menus is not easy, always tricky, but that is what you have to do.

"barely can see the tast bar icons"

That could be due to an unfortunate choice of Colours, Windows Mode, Windows theme.

MisterEd, that would be great if and only IF, the Menu button did anything when pressed. As I said, I have held the Menu button in for as long as 15 seconds or more and nothing hahppens.

Note I have a Gateway 5120 monitor. It is about 25 years old. I do find references to Gateway 5120 monitors online but none of them look anything like mine. That means these monitors are much newer than mine.

I assume your computer is booted because at least for my monitor the MENU button does nothing unless there is a video signal sent to it. To get the monitor menu to show all I have to do is gently tap the MENU button.

I realize navigating the menus is trial and error. Your have to play with the buttons until you find what they do. I will illustrate how use the MENU buttons on my monitor.

    1. The buttons on the front of my monitor. The relevant buttons are MENU, -, +, and SELECT/AUTO.

    2. Once the first menu is shown I use the -/+ buttons to switch menus until I see the BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST menu. I use the SELECT button to select BRIGHTNESS.

    3. I then use -/+ buttons to change monitor brightness
