What will my performance by if I get a 4k tv

My laptop is an Alienware 17 r5 i9 laptop and it has a GTX 1080 graphics card with 8gb vram. The laptop screen is 1080p 60hz. I am connecting the laptop to an 1080p 60hz tv by hdmi. I play games on 60 fps.

My tv is very old and I want to buy a new tv. Most of the tvs these days are 4k tvs so I am considering buying a new tv which is 4k 120hz and I want to connect it to my tv by hdmi. I know that to play games on 4k 120fps I need an hdmi 2.1. I don't have that and I have an hdmi 2.0. Thus that means that I cant get both 120 fps and 4k and I can only get one of them like 1080p 120fps or 4k 60fps. Playing games on 4k is a bit much for my graphics card so I want to play games on 1080p.

I should be able to set the tv resolution and refresh rate from the display settings in Windows. I will set it to 1080p 120hz. If I do that then will I be able to get 120 fps in games? I am getting mixed opinions. Some people are telling me that I can and others telling me that I can't because my graphics card is too old. I know that it's old but that doesn't mean that it's crap.

I rarely play very demanding games like Control. I mostly play turn based\action jrpg games and point and click adventure games.

Yes GTX 1080 can do 4k and even when you mention non demanding games, 1080p will have no effect either way it will be like you are playing now but you will have to scale the DPI up because stuff will be to small probably.

Do you mean the DPI in the compatibility settings? If yes then for what shall I do that?

I don't want to do 4k. I want to run the tv in 1080p and I want to play games on 120 fps. Is that possible?

Neo QLED 4K QN90B QA43QN90BAUXZN | Samsung Gulf is a good 4k tv. I won't have any problems if I set the resolution on the tv to 1080p and I play games and I watch 1080p/720p movies?

Which is more suitable for me? Buying an external monitor like this MSI Optix 32-inch 175HZ Monitor MPG321QRF-QD - Monitors & Accessories- Macrotronics - Computer Store or I run a 4k tv on 1080p? I am worried that if I bought a 4k tv that I could regret it later on because of some unexpected problems.

Because if you do 1080 on 4k it will look small so you need to use DPI to make it fit properly. Sorry no it won't but it may not look right so you have to use DPI.

I am saying in my previous post you can do both so do what you decide to do. All though IMO if you going to get a 4k monitor then you might as well make the most of it and do 4k.

The samsung TV you have chosen supports freesync and g-sync and is xbox/ps5 compatible. The TV is 120hz but the 43" version goes even higher 144hz. Check out rtings.

Well yes Golden rule is you should always target the resolution that you want to run so if you want to do 1080p then just buy a 1080p Monitor.

You should also be buying a proper computer or gaming monitor and not a TV unless you want to actually watch TV on it too outside of using it for the computer. Otherwise if TV is not in the equation then get a PC monitor because they are just better and TV's are more generalized.
