Will using custom resolution utility work for me?

I don't know if you can force a TV resolution to something it doesn't support. Hopefully a well made TV will prevent that.

BTW, I know that CRTs didn't prevent what you are trying to do. I learned the hard way and killed a CRT monitor.

I have read but can't verify that a screen runs best at its native resolutions. That said to answer your question you probably couldn't tell the difference.

In any case, if you want higher resolutions and refresh rates then buy a high quality monitor that can supports your requirements. But then to match this you need a comparable high end graphic card that can match these capabilities. Since you are aiming for higher than normal resolution and refresh rates then a computer monitor is your best options. There are good TVs that can match what a good monitor can do but they are very expensive.

60 fps on 60hz would be good if you are getting the proper frame time which you can actively measure with something like Afterburner. if you are not getting the right frame time then that means you are lagging and you will be able to see this visually anyway with choppy game, actually not always but you may notice visually.

60 fps on a 144hz refresh rate would also mean losing information because you are only queuing 60 frames per second so its still the same result as a 60hz monitor just on a monitor that can do triple that amount.

as you can see there is some complexity to it but just know that lower refresh rates get less information than higher ones and also at a slower rate that is bound by refresh rate. You can see it in the video example look at 60hz monitor he is looks like he is lagging but its because he is losing some of the information. That video is also slowed down because its recorded at 1000fps which is slow motion.
