My monitor is flickering. Can I do anything about it?

    PC specs: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/J...v6yrKlpMMqIWU7

I have four monitors connected to my Nvidia NVS 510 adaptor. One of them is a Dell U2311H, which has started flickering intermittently. When it happens (which is a few times per day) it goes on for a while, but it's not happening all the time.

None of the other three monitors flicker, which makes me think it's the monitor itself, not the display adaptor. The monitor is connected via a DisplayPort cable.

I checked both ends of the cable, and it's seated fine.

I used ScreenToGif (ScreenToGif) to capture an animation whilst it was flickering, but the animation didn't show any flickering. Assuming ScreenToGif pulls its data from the adaptor, this further implies (to my non-technical mind) that the adaptor is fine.

So, based on this, am I right in thinking it's the monitor? If so, is there any way to fix it, or is even worth the effort? The monitor was manufacturer in 2011, and I think I bought it not long after that, so I've had good use out of it.

Thanks for any advice you can give. if there's any other info I need to supply, please let me know.

Move the monitor to a different "location" in your setup, or to a different computer entirely, to see if the flickering still occurs.

Something similar happened to me. I changed the cable after I found an article online saying that cheap cables can deteriorate. After I changed it the problem stopped.

Good idea. I'll give that a go and see what happens.

I don't remember where the cable came from, but it's been working for quite a long time. However, I guess cables can deteriorate over time.

I'll try both your and Ghot's ideas and see if either help. Will probably take a couple of days to be sure though, as the problem is intermittent.

    Thanks

@Ghot Right, finally got the time to move monitors around, and it seems to be the monitor. Plugging it in to a different port on the same card didn't make any difference. The same monitor is flickering in the new port, and the other monitor is not flickering when plugged into the old port.

So it looks like the monitor. The question is, is this something that could be fixed, or do I buy a new monitor?

    Thanks again

Tried another cable and the same thing happened. Also, as you can see from my reply to Ghot, it does seem to be the monitor.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Unless it's one of the monitor's settings, probably not.
It could always be the connector on the monitor itself.. Also, the power cords on some monitors, have a capacitor or something... inline (a bulge in the cord). If your monitor has a power cord like that, it could be the cord itself.

Other than the connector and the power cord and the monitor's settings, anything else would cost too much to "fix".

The only other test I can think of, is to try the problem monitor on another computer entirely.

@Ghot Thanks for the quick reply. The connector looks fine, and the cable is a standard one, no bulge. Haven't touched the monitor settings for years, so it's unlikely to be that. Also, I'm not sure why any manufacturer would add a setting that made the monitor flicker! Bit like when you set up a printer, and (at one time at least) one of the options was "no page curl." I could never understand why anyone wouldn't choose such an option! Who wants page curl anyway!

So it looks like it's the monitor. Can't really complain, I've had it for 11 years, so I reckon I've had my money's worth

Thanks again for all the help. Guess I'll go and look at new monitors.
