    Hi MisterEd

Going by the driver my friend installed it's an Nvidia Geforce 210.
From what I can find this is a low end card that runs hot and requires the fan, The fan speed is not controllable.

If the card's fan noise is objectionable you have two choices:
    1. Improve the air flow in your case to cool the card better. The cards fan may run quieter then.
    2. Find a different graphic card that is quieter

Thanks again, MisterEd. Yes, agree it's a low rent thing that a friend fitted to get my pc going after the original card on the mother board quit. Just bought an ASUS GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 after MaloK's recommendation.

Going to attempt to install it myself after watching an excellent Youtube video. Doesn't look too difficult - mainly uninstall old driver using Wagnardsoft DDU, install new card, upload correct driver and a few tweaks to the display settings. If I get it right, silence will reign again. If not, I'll be back with more questions.

One thing occurred to me. When I install the new silent/fanless GPU the cooling fins hang down below the card. There are three unused slots/blanks in the rear casing immediately below the top one which is occupied by the card.

Would it be a good idea to remove the three slot blanks and put in vented plates to help remove heat from the card and other components inside case? Or is there negative/positive pressure created by other fan(s) inside case that will be upset by extra vents? Or is it a bad idea because these vents will allow in dust?

    Maybe I'm over thinking this?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you think the graphic card is too hot. Does your computer have a rear fan to exhaust air. That would help more if you need it.

No rear fan, but it has holes in the middle of back plate that look like it should accommodate one.

If the screw holes are 5.81 inches (148mm)(diagonal), apart... it's a 120mm fan
If the screw holes (diagonally) are 6.9 inches (176mm) apart it's a 140mm fan

It looks like it might take either a 120mm or a 140mm. If so, get a 140mm.
For the same amount of airflow... the 140mm will be quieter.

Or... for the same amount of noise (dBa) the 140mm will push more air.

"Doesn't look too difficult - mainly uninstall old driver using Wagnardsoft DDU, install new card, upload correct driver and a few tweaks to the display settings. "

No need to use DDU at all, just uninstall the driver, install the Card and the new driver. I have been replacing expansion cards and using Nvidia graphics cards for 30+ years.

It is simpler than you think it is.

As for the extra fan, make sure that it fits the available space inside. They come in standard sizes.

From an airflow perspective you would be creating negative pressure due to effectively 2 output fans, and incoming air through various case holes, probably some vents in the front panel.

That would increase dust accumulation somewhat as there are probably no input air dust filters.

And also cut the OEM guard off and use one of these.

The configuration you case has creates more turbulence between the fan blades and the case than air circulation.

Also get a fan that has speed control.

OK, thanks again for help and advice.

One question. The original graphic card that came with the pc when new is part of the mother board. This card is broken. A friend put in a used card into the connector slot, but unfortunately the fan bearings are getting noisier - so I have a replacement Nvidia Geforce card without fan (passive cooling). I realise I need to delete the driver for the noisy card I'm removing then install the new card - then I think I need to download new driver. Will this work downloading the new driver after new card installation as when I first turn on there won't be any working graphics card or driver?

Or should I download the new card's driver BEFORE installing it?

Wait until after you install the graphic card before you install the driver. When the computer boots it will install a basic graphics driver. After you log in you can install the graphics driver.

Thanks, MisterEd - makes sense. I couldn't understand how my pc would function after installing new card without any drivers. Now I see.
