Windows Update installed Nvidia DCH driver over the Standard driver

Yesterday I saw WU install a Nvidia DCH game ready driver including the Nvidia control panel sourced from the MS store. I've been running the standard type for my GeForce series 10 since ~ 2019. The driver was clean installed in 2019 with DDU. I've never had driver updates installed through WU before and I always manually downloaded version updates on Nvidia.com.
I don't have GeForce Experience installed. I had the most recent version installed (v 472.12) until yesterday

Why did MS make a change for the type of driver installed for my Nvidia 10 series card? Are DCH type drivers going to be automatically installed for all GeForce series cards going forward? Is this something that just started with all GeForce cards or just a few series?

I'd like to clean uninstall what WU did along with the control panel from the MS store. The thing is though WU will probably re-install a DCH type over again.

You can prevent the DCH driver from being reinstalled.

First, roll back to the driver that you want.

Download the Microsoft "Show or Hide Updates" troubleshooter tool from here and then run it:

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...owhide.diagcab

    Click on "Advanced".

Uncheck "Apply repairs automatically" and click "Next".

    Select "Hide updates"

Select the update(s) to hide, then click on "Next".

    Close the troubleshooter.

    Thank you @hsehestedt
I am somewhat familiar with MS's show/ hide utility tool. It has been quite a long time since I used the tool. It was years ago

Perhaps I'm incorrect so correct me if I'm mistaken. Doesn't this tool only provide a non-permanent solution ? Eventually, wont Windows Update push the Nvidia DCH driver again?

its odd to find windows update installing a DCH driver over a Standard driver for the first time ever on a GTX 10 series card. I haven't read anywhere to date on any reason for it happening

I can't say with certainty whether Windows update might push the update eventually. I can only tell you my personal experience. I had one system, and I blocked a driver and it stayed blocked for several years until I retired the system.

As for the DCH drivers, I think that they are the preferred driver model now because they have several advantages. Maybe that's why they are pushing them? Again, I cannot say with certainty.

Most drivers are DCH now. No real difference over standard non-DCH drivers. The latter need MS Store to download additional stuff when needed (like nVidia's CP).

Microsoft will push the newest drivers they have for the device when you have installed the oldest version of the driver.

Yes. I'm aware that functionally there is no difference between the DCH and Standard video display drivers. . My comment below expands on what I had omitted from my first post

my first post said that I had the most recent version installed (v 472.12)

I omitted in my first comments the underlying reason of this post. I’ve had a bad experience with allowing Windows to update Nvidia's display drivers in the past (2018/19). And due to that experience, I sought to never give Windows carte blanche to do so again.

While the issues with my system were not Microsoft’s fault, it was Microsoft that updated my GPU.

Nvidia's Help page for these driver distribution changes mentions customers can download a standard Nvidia driver using the Advanced Driver Search page.
Installing the Standard driver had worked for me for several years up until just recently by preventing WIN10 update from installing the DCH driver.

While Nvidia assures that the two driver sets are functionally equivalent, its my understanding that Nvidia has no plans to stop offering a Standard driver.

Some users may not care about using the Microsoft OS to have their display driver automatically updated. I personally do care and I was under the impression until recently that there was still a way to retain manual control over how my driver is updated.

this may or may not any longer be the case..IDK

The 472.12 driver is the latest "standard" driver, found here: Official Advanced Driver Search | NVIDIA

The latest DCH driver is... GeForce 516.94 WHQL driver.

For some reason, I can't get the Manual search to "load" at the proper site: Official GeForce Drivers | NVIDIA

But you can always get the latest DCH drivers at Guru3D... Videocards - NVIDIA GeForce Windows 7 | 8 | 10 | 11
