Sharing ASUS Monitor with two Computers

    Hello All,

I have an HDMI Monitor sharing switch. I want to share a brand new ASUS TUF Gaming VG279Q1A with my work laptop and my home computer (Desktop). The ASUS TUF Gaming VG279Q1A has both HDMI and DisplayPort, my home computer has HDMI and my work laptop has DisplayPort.

I tried to connects the Asus Monitor via an HDMI cable to the monitor sharing switch. I connected the Asus to the monitor sharing switch via an HDMI Cable. I then connected my home computer to the switch via HDMI cable. I connected my work laptop via HDMI Cable and a converter which takes HDMI and converts HDMI into DisplayPort. My home computer works without issues but my work laptop flickers and will not work.

After lots of troubleshooting and trying different things, I am convinced that when I use an HDMI to Displayport cable or if I take an HDMI cable and I use an HDMI to Displayport adapter, the Asus Monitor does not work. It did not matter if it was my work pc or home pc, the moment I use an adapter or HDMI to Displayport cable, the Asus monitor would not work.

I am willing to try more troubleshooting steps so if you can think of anything, let me know. Ultimately, I think the fix is to change the video card on my home PC to Displayport so I am using Displayport on my home computer, work computer and on the Asus Monitor. I have a Displayport monitor switch.

    I am running Windows 10.

    Thanks, Bill

As far as can see your monitor should have 1 DisplayPort & 2 HDMI connectors. So I cannot see a reason for using any switches or convertors - just connect your computers to the appropriate inputs & use the monitor controls to switch between inputs if required. The monitors I have used will, if you only have one of the PCs turned on, select the active connection automatically.

    rqt,

You are right about my monitor. The problem is I want to share my monitor between my work and home computer. My home computer has HDMI and my work only has display port. I need to use a monitor sharing switch that is either all HDMI or all Displayport. So if I go all HDMI, I need an adapter (HDMI to Displayport) for my work and if I go all Displayport, I need an adapter for my home computer. Using an adapter with the Asus monitor is what causes problems.

My monitor has 1 DisplayPort + 2 HDMI connectors, I have 1 computer connected to the DisplayPort & 2 computers connected to the HDMI connectors.

If more than 1 of the computers is turned on I can switch between them using the controls on the monitor,

I have no adapters & no switches.

So I don't understand your problem

Holy cow. I did not try that.... The monitor allows for two HDMI and one Displayport. Duh!

So you are saying eliminate the monitor sharing switch and use the monitors input to change between my work PC and my home PC? So I could forget about the monitor sharing port and the cable or adapter to switch from HDMI to Displayport.

    Dangit. If that works.. brilliant.

Even better, some monitors are able to sense which port has an active signal and then switches inputs accordingly. The one I have that does that is an Alienware AW2720HF. At one time I has 3 different PC's each using a different type of display cable and I never had to manually switch inputs as long as I only had one turned on at a time.

    SoFine09,

I hope my monitor does not autosense. I want to be able to switch from my work pc to my home pc. I dont want the monitor to somehow determine which is active. Maybe I am not understanding the feature?

How does your monitor know which pc to choose for a video source? Thanks

Good question. Unfortunately I have no idea how autosense works with multiple live inputs since I no longer have multiple inputs connected to it that particular monitor but my guess is that it would ask you to select which input to use. Seems like the only logical way it could deal with it. Maybe someone will chime in who has experience with this.

My monitor auto senses if you turn on a PC with no others active, but requires manual switching if you have 2 PCs turned on both with active video signals (an active video signal could just be showing a blank screen) Give it a try - you may find you want to change the monitor shut off times in the PC power settings.
