The way it looks, nobody can get today's GPUs for msrp until next gen comes out.
It's worse than that. Check the prices on the nVidia RTX 20x0 series and GTX 16x0 ("Turing"), as compared to the current generation RTX 30x0 ("Ampere").

The previous generations GTX 10x0 ("Pascal") cards and GTX 9x0 ("Maxwell") cards are also expensive, when bought as new. The main advantage of the older cards is that they can be found in the used market.

I wonder when the supply will rise to meet the demand? Or cryptocurrency is outlawed world wide, so that the miners won't be buying GPUs any more? (I figure that the latter is about as likely as the repeal of the 2nd amendment of the US Constitution.)

Which card did you get? I got the ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti card. It has 2 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The red flashing lights by the connectors drove me crazy until I found out how to turn them off.

They have, at least in the US. Reseller (scalper) prices on the 3080 have dropped from 3X original MSRP to 2X.

Hard to predict how long the current situation will endure into 2022. (Or 2023?)
Prices have come down slightly in Canada, but the last time I looked, the price of the average 3080 is still $500 to $700 more than the US price. That doesn't even add up to the conversion of currency from USD to CAD. Canadians (as usual) are still being overcharged for computer gear. We see the same with CPUs, motherboards and the like. And on top of the premium we are paying, we have to pay tax (and sometimes duties) on the stuff we order.

It certainly isn't fair. But to quote one boneheaded member of Parliament from a couple of years ago:

"Canadians don't mind paying higher prices for the goods they buy..."

I call BS on that statement.

I managed to get an EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra last December from a local scalper who managed to pick it up at our local Microcenter. He also had the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X that I couldn't obtain elsewhere. I paid $1700 for the CPU and the GPU...and in retrospect it was a fantastic deal as the GPU's are going for that much on their own almost a year later.

In February of 2021, I signed up for a NewEgg shuffle for an EVGA 3060 XC which I was selected for and I got that video card for my wife's computer. It was $399.

I signed up directly on the EVGA site, and have been in the notify list now since Oct of 2020 and haven't been notified that any product is available now and it's been a year. Incredible.

As luck would have it, I got another Newegg shuffle combo yesterday. It was for an msi 3070 gaming z trio and msi spatium 2TB nvme drive.

I have a friend who wanted it, so I bought it and it's going to him. He's paying me back and because I'm not a scalper, I'm not marking it up a single cent.

Which would you recommend for GPU performance?

Foe a quick check, Furmark. FurMark > Home

While its default running time is only one minute, it really stresses the graphics card. In the past, some graphics card makers built a check into their drivers to downclock their cards because they couldn't run flat out without overheating. A 3060 probably will not do that.
