    Windows 10 21H1 screen-light sensor issue..

..after upgrade to SSD from HDD on Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7132 laptop.

I tried to screen-record the issue to show "how" it acts, the display, but it didn't record the display dimming. I goes from lighter to darker but not black, every few seconds. The amount of time between the dimming is different as well.

I searched out different trouble-shooting and ended up looking into Device Manager for Sensor, and Light Sensor. I don't have it on my laptop, or PC for that matter so I may be dead in the water. I did check for "hidden devices" as well.

I am thinking of reinstalling Windows 10, but wanted to ask first if there might be something else causing the dimming display that I might look into instead. If someone can help, I would so appreciate it. My laptop was purchased in 2011-12, and everything went fine with the install of the SSD, and the download of a new installation of Windows 10 using Media tool.

One thing that puzzled me was I still had to search out the latest version (21H1) after downloading Win 10 but that wasn't a big problem. Just don't want to go further without asking for help, thanks much, in advance

I figured this out, but pretty embarrassed since it has to do with my laptop being plugged in, and the battery is charged. I just leave it plugged in since I don't move it most of the time.

I know the cable has never fit "tight" like it should, so I'll be looking at getting a new cable. The lighting issue is gone now that I unplugged it. Not sure if that's the bottom line or not so anyone is welcome to chime in. It's not 100% solved in other words, but I can stop the lighting issue if I unplug it

In case the issue raises its ugly head again, do consider the settings for display dimming that may have been put in by the computer maker.
    - I don't think they are the sole cause of what you have seen because the irregularity indicated by, "... every few seconds. The amount of time between the dimming is different as well.", is not, to my mind, consistent with that.
    - Having the computer irregularly slipping between AC & DC power as you describe would confuse the pattern and would explain your comments.

Letting yourself see what display dimming has been put on by your computer maker will give you somewhere to start.
    - Mine had set it to dim after 30 secs on AC power only.

    Ok Denis,

This whole "dimming" thing really got me confused, sorry Denis. In my OP, I did check on the dimming issue. So I kind of repeated myself below.

Ok, mine doesn't have Adaptive Brightness option Denis. Also, my laptop has "turn off after" and "sleep after" nothing saying dim after which must be one of Windows upgrades/changes. I really don't get it, but it is what it is as they say. I definitely don't have the Adaptive Brightness option on either my new Gaming PC or my old laptop. Neither has the sensor in Device Manager, hidden or not, so no light sensor.

Thank you for your info, and let me know if I overlooked something in your reply. I do have the default settings in when to "sleep" or "turn off screen" 5 & 10 minutes for now.

My Toshiba is from 2012 so most likely, didn't have that feature yet. Thank you for you info though

Perhaps I inadvertently added to the confusion by posting that information so soon. I wanted to indicate what you should look at next if the problem remained after you had improved your power supply connection.

The topic I raised has nothing to do with Adaptive brightness.

Adding the two items to Power options does not mean adding them to that dialog showing Turn off the display after / Sleep after etc. It adds them to the list you can see if you click on Change advanced power settings.

The two tutorials I linked to have illustrations of what you'll see in Change advanced power settings.
There's a third tutorial about a related entry in there so here's a link so you can check that as well while you are looking at the others.

It seemed to me that one or more of these settings might be involved in the irregular dimming you are seeing.

Yes, I did go into those settings as well Denis. I am finding my laptop with no issues now since I took out the battery and running it "only" on power-cord.

Interesting, but the battery is fairly new, but started doing a dimming thing again. It's working now like I said though, so I don't want to change any settings I already have right now If it comes up again though, I have this all to look into again

    Thank you much! Denise
