i've done the registry download option of your last suggestion in post #2, unsinstalled the drivers, put the old ones back on and reconnected to the internet. i've set GeForce Experience to not auto download too, so hopefully that's the last i'll hear of it!

This looks very like a bug reported perhaps a year or more ago when no normal means would stop Nvidia updating.
so i'm stuck w/ it? :-( this is....really vexing.
edit - yep, effing thing's just put itself on. apparently tried it immediately yesterday too but failed, according to my history.
Not if you choose to take complete control of WU (disable it) using a 3rd party tool. Then only what you choose (using a selection box) is applied.

interestingly, this machine [w/ the GTX970] shows the same update back in december, and hasn't had a single issue of the driver settings not loading, or loading then resetting, on start-up. about the only major diff is this this 2004 and the other machine is 20H2.
