At random, screen would go blank for a few seconds then come back.

Sounds like the HDMI connector on your motherboard is shot, or possibly just loose.

They make HDMI cables with a locking heads. You might try one of them.
But if the HDMI connector on the motherboard is damaged, that may not even help.



As you can see from this pic of your motherboard, the HDMI connector is pretty fragile.

If it was the APU (CPU), it would happen on the VGA as well.

You eliminated the monitor, and the cable. What's left?

The motherboard connectors (HDMI, and VGA) or the associated circuits.
I don't know, when, in the circuits, they split the VGA and the HDMI. I would assume it's right before the connectors.

We also don't know the accuracy of your wiggle test. It may be up and down, side to side, in and out... etc.

The fact that it's "random" pretty much rules out thermal compound on the CPU pins.
If it was intermittent on a "pattern", that might point somewhere else.

A pattern like... whenever you open a certain game, or program. Or perform a certain task.


I mean there's the off chance you could just have two bad HDMI cables. I wouldn't bet on it.

I guess it could have something to do with the driver also. Did you have the problem before the latest driver?

You started this thread approx. 3 hours ago. How long have you had the problem?
What changed between when you didn't have the problem, and when you first noticed it?


I noticed you mentioned "latest" driver in Feb 2021... might want to try an older driver.



DDU Instructions - AMD
1. Get this program, here: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) | Wagnardsoft ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
2. Get your vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download ...save this to your desktop.
Unhook the internet completely.
3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
4. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the AMD driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.
Rehook the internet.

Lot of folks have had issues with AMD drivers, in general.
Sometimes, with older equipment, going back to an older driver helps.

I would suggest a driver closer in age to the system... maybe a 2018 driver?

Also, we just had a Windows Update. If you don't have drivers blocked, sometimes a driver comes with the update and corrupts the one you have. That's what DDU is for. It completely removes the AMD driver and gives you a fresh start, so to speak.

It's also used for Nvidia drivers for the same reason.

Most important though is to try and remember what changed/when... and cause the problem to occur.

Tried DDU and several drivers from mid-summer 2019 which is when I built this.

Lets face it. Win 10 + AMD cpus + AMD drivers = crap.

I've been looking at an Intel I5-8400 and an ASUS PRIME B360M-A

Thanks for all your help but I think I'm going back to Intel. At least their GPU drivers work.

Guess what? When the glitch occurs, I give the case a 'whack' and the screen display returns much quicker!

I'm beginning to think it's something in the MB.
