Thank you Dalchina and W10 Tweaker. I tried click monitor but it had no effect on the brightness. There may be no real solution to adjusting the brightness unless I can get hold of a better driver. At least the night light works.
Thank you all for your help.
    Kind regards

    You're welcome Chris.

    Some questions for you...

I trust that all functioned properly previously to the Windows 10 upgrade, no display or brightness issues?
And this was an upgrade as apposed to a clean install?
You haven't installed the display driver as it is still the same driver as the previous OS?

If your answer to all these questions is yes, I have an idea.

Download the latest driver if you haven't already. Like this one.

Before you start, it would always be a good idea to create a restore point and an image backup using Macrium Reflect or similar program.

Find the display adapter in the device manager, delete the device, including the driver and reboot.

Locate the driver file you've downloaded, right-click and select Troubleshoot compatibility.

Then select Vista as the OS.

Installing drivers using Compatibility mode is always a crapshoot but I've had success using this process to install drivers for an old Dell laptop.

    PS
something odd happened with my last post forcing me to start another to add the last pic.

Thank you Win 10 Tweaker. I never though of installing a driver in compatibility mode before. In my situation though, its not that simple. The original driver that came with the laptop was compatible with Vista 32 bit. Then I upgraded to Win 7 32 bit and the driver still worked fine. Then I upgraded to Win 10 32 bit. Windows installed a new Intel driver automatically but the brightness control stopped working. I tried a clean install of Win 10 32 bit with the same results. Since my original post, I have done a clean install of Win 10 64 bit and the laptop is running great, but the brightness control still doesn't work. I tried the basic Microsoft display adapter but that was even worse so I reverted back to the Intel driver. The intel driver support assistant could not find anything new. There is no Intel graphics control panel to adjust anything. Windows can change the RGB values and the night light function works but not brightness. I suppose as a work around, I could fiddle with the Windows display calibration and move the rgb sliders equally down to 80% and leave them there to dim the display a bit. So, unless I can find a better driver I can't see a solution.

    Kind regards
    Chris

I'd say your testing to date has shown that the driver worked properly with Vista and Win7 but not with Windows 10. At this point in time, your brightness adjustment does not function.

If you plan to continue using Windows 10, and unless there's a better idea, removing and installing the same driver in compatibility mode doesn't require much effort. Just create a restore point and backup image first, to be extra safe.

I've used compatibility mode for decades and have never had any problems. If the driver installation doesn't work, delete and install again by executing the exe file. The entire process will take far less time than creating an image backup.

The last driver for the Mobile Intel 965 chip (discontinued) is listed here Support Options for Discontinued Intel® Graphics Products

Create a backup or system restore first then try the driver.

Unless I missed something, both these drivers are for win7 32 bit or win7 64 bit. I'd try both using compatibility mode if the win10 drivers don't work (installed using compatibility mode (Vista and/or win7).

Chris, if I were you, now you have even more options to try. Personally, I'd start with the win10 64 bit if that's the OS you're currently using, and then try these Win7 drivers next. Just delete the device in the device manager and reboot before trying the next option.

This was a regular event with Win2K, Win98 & win95 although I've had better success with Windows 10 using compatibility mode.

OP has win 32 bit. Should install the 7 version ok. I couldn't access your previous link for the driver as Malwarebytes refused it. On overriding Mbam got the "The server has refused to fulfill your request." 403 forbidden.

I'm not surprised that MalwareBytes refused a driverscape link, I'm not a big fan but if the download only includes the driver and I can't get it on the manufacturer's site, I might use it. To be honest, I should spend more time to locate the original driver from the manufacturer.

BTW, according to the OPer, he has since upgraded to Win10 64 bit, hence my suggesting the 64bit first.

That post has lots of details, I'll never admit how many times I read it to be sure.

Chris, should you decide to take up the Compatibility Mode challenge, please keep in mind, at least with the older OS', sometimes it requires trying many methods to find a working solution.

Looking on the bright side, the process is pretty easy with very strong odds that at the least, nothing will be corrupted, and at the best, you might find a working solution.

    BTW, I located more potential usable drivers here;
