I had the same type problem on a older Lenovo running Radeon 3000 graphics . If brightness is all you are after download
Gamma Panel . This seems to work pretty good as an alternative . You can adjust brightness, contrast, gamma with it and save different profiles . Im running fine on the 20H2 version of Windows 10 . Download Gamma Panel - MajorGeeks
Vipergg, thank you very much fore sharing this information. I never heard about Gama Panel before. Its good to know about this useful tool. In my particular case, AMD had a Windows 8 driver that worked on my Lenovo G575 which used the AMD Raedon HD 6250M graphics card. But in the future, a tool like this could be useful.

    Kind regards

I just wanted to add a missing piece of the puzzle to the final solution as it may help someone with a similar issue in the future.

Recap. After upgrading my Lenovo G575 from Win 7 64 bit to Win 10 64 bit the brightness controls would not work with the display driver that Windows had installed.

First Solution. I found an older Windows 8 driver on the Lenovo downloads website. After installing it, the brightness controls worked fine.

This week I found the laptop could not play any videos with the Win 8 Driver. I tried several video players. When I double clicked the video I got the error, "server execution failed". If I used, "open with" VLC or WM Player the video would start to play, then suddenly the video player window would disappear.

I found that if I updated to the driver from Windows update then the videos would play fine... but then the brightness controls stopped working.

I installed the latest AMD Catalyst Control Centre. I installed the AMD chipset install manager. Once the "latest" drivers were installed, the videos would play fine but the brightness control would stop working. In desperation, I created a restore point and then installed the free version Driver Booster. It said it updated some drivers including the display driver. But still the brightness controls would not work.

Then I stumbled on the solution here:
Can't adjust brightness on Windows 10? Here's how to fix it

Its the one down the list: "Fix an ATI Bug via the Registry editor"

It says to change four registry values. In my case I only had to change one value (highlighted in red) as it was the only one available on my machine.

    1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet001 \ Control\Class \ {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} \ 0000
    2. Double click on MD_EnableBrightnesslf2. Change Value to 0 and repeat the same thing with KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2. (Change Value from 1 to 0)
    3. Next, we will be navigating to a different path:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} \ 0001
    4. Double click on MD_EnableBrightnesslf2 and change its Value to 0. Do the same with KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2.

After rebooting, the brightness controls work fine with the driver from Windows update. Videos play without any problem.

After spending many hours trying to solve this problem, it appears that in the millions of lines of code, a 1 had to be changed into a 0. Oh, the joys of computing!

I hope this will be able to help someone else in the future

    Kind regards
