What is the Purpose of Two Graphics Cards?

I'm curious but I noticed that a few people install 2 RTX 2080 Ti graphic cards in their computers.

    Why do people do this?

Are there games that actually require this much processing power? Is upscaling and playing 4k movies perfectly require this? Or, is it merely for bitcoin mining?

Thanks for anyone with a pretty good idea.

The cpu in them has a lot of power and things like photoshop and video making can use them to speed up the normal cpu

For the same reason people use multi-core processors. And yes, there are games that require that much processing power in order to have high detail.

Thanks for your reply. What is the the reason people would use multi-core processors like this? I really have no idea.

Which games would require this? Would it be games like Fortnite or are there other games that require super duper power?

The original Crysis, still brings video cards to their knees.

Well think of Flight Simulator and Train Simulator on high detail with one or two 4K UHD monitors.

It is not required but some games require 2 GPU to get the full experience in terms of the smoothness and fluidity of 3D rendering at maximum settings.
For some, it is just a bragging rights for benchmark "competitions".

I used to rock 2 GPUs a very long time ago. But at this time and age, those GPUs I had are very useful as paper weights... :)

nVidia SLI: Scalable Link Interface - Wikipedia

AMD Crossfire: AMD CrossFire - Wikipedia

The term SLI originally meant "scan line interleaving" as used by the late, lamented 3dfx. 3dfx Interactive - Wikipedia (I may still have a Voodoo 1 card in a box, somewhere.)

Multiple cards are used for 3D gaming to run higher resolutions than would be practical with a single card. It's also useful for lightening gamer's wallets.

Graphics cards can also be used for some specialized processing applications. At one time high-end cards were hard to get because they were being bought up bu cryptocurrency (e. g., Bitcoin) miners. Some supercomputers have been built using many nVidia GPUs that are dedicated to processing; no graphics.
