    Can't install Latest Nvidia Driver

    Hi,

I'm having a problem installing the latest nvidia driver (456.71) on a clean install of Windows.

    System specs are:

    • Dell Precision T1600
    • Windows 10 x64 version 2004 (build 19041.572) All updates applied.
    • CPU: Intel Xeon E31270 @ 3.4 GHz
    • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
    • Nvidia GeForce GT 730 (Windows installed driver version 388.13)

I downloaded the driver from Nvidia and double clicked to launch. While doing a system compatibility check, I receive the message, "NVIDIA installer cannot continue. This NVIDIA is not compatible with this version of Windows. The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware."

    • I have tried unininstalling the windows installed nvidia drivers using DDU in Safe Mode as outlined here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce...-with/2196734/

I was NOT connected to any networks when I then tried to install the new driver.

    • I also tried modifying the nvaci.inf file as described in this video:

How to fix NVIDIA installer Errors(is not compatible and could not find compatible graphics). - YouTube

The problem with that was, I could only modify the very first line the video told me to. All the following lines to be modified did not exist.

So, I'm at a loss. It would be really nice to have this old machine completely up to date. Thanks in advance for any help.

    DDU Instructions - Nvidia
    1. Get this program, here: Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
    2. Get your vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: Advanced Driver Search | NVIDIA ...save this to your desktop.
    Unhook the internet completely.
    3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
    4. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the Nvidia driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.
    Rehook the internet.

Most often it's best to install the best tested driver and then perform Windows upgrade.
An alternative is to use the Nvidia driver update tool.

That was the first thing I did...to the letter.

Although not stated in my original post, I tried that as well.

Try the 442.74 drivers. Those are the ones I'm using, and they seem pretty stable, and installed no problem.

You are on an Administrator account, right? Also, if you have a 3rd party AV and/or firewall... disable them.

Are you trying to install a 32 bit driver on a 64 bit system or vice versa? I use NVCleanstall to find compatible Nvidia drivers and to avoid installing all the bloatware NVCleanstall (v1.7.0) Download | TechPowerUp

The lastest driver won't gain you anything with a 6 yo GPU.

Just use an older driver. My GT 700 series Nvidia GPU uses 419.72 (Windows updates).
It gets updated about yearly, no problems.

I have used Nvidia GPUs for 20 years and in that time only once using the 'latest driver' for about 1 week, it had to be uninstalled and an earlier driver used.

I didn't mention that nVidia's driver search offers 456.71 for the GT730, as you post. I checked that first.

I also checked the supported devices list.

I recognize the inconsistency. That's why I qualified my post. I can't recall a specific example, but I'm fairly sure that the nVidia servers have offered drivers in the past that were no longer supported on old cards. I have no direct knowledge whether that may be true here.

I'm unsure as to what drivers Windows Update provides for newer cards. I imagine they're newer than 388.13. That strongly suggests that the GT730 is not supported by recent drivers.

I suggest that "bug67" try the older drivers. If those work, that would suggest that there is no hardware issue.

If "bug67" wants the latest drivers, but the GT730 isn't supported, it may be possible to modify the installer to accept it. (Need a hobby?)
