I believe 640x480 is the default screen resolution so I suspect something is wrong either with your graphics card, or your graphics card drivers.

    Here is what I suggest.
    - Turn off PC.
    - Reseat graphics card by pulling it out of the slot, and carefully putting it back in. Make sure the card is evenly and fully pushed into the slot.
    - If you take out the graphics card you can also try cleaning any contacts with alcohol and a cotton swab. Let the alcohol evaporate before putting the card back in.
    - Turn on PC.

Does it work now? If not try this:

    - Uninstall graphic card drivers.
    - Reboot PC.
    - Reinstall latest graphics card drivers.
    - Reboot PC.

    Does it work now?

did all that, but looks like it was the Display port cable....gave it a wiggle and the display returned to normal....hopefully its the lead...ordered a new one....although fairly confident as didn`t happen while using an hdmi cable

This makes sense somehow since native Windows 10 video driver should be able to do 1080p, and Windows might switch to it if the manufacturer's driver malfunctions so severy that it fails to launch. If something goes wrong with the display or its cable instead, resulting in Windows and the display failing to "communicate" normally, it would make sense for Windows to force the manufacturer's video driver to switch to the default resolution, 640x480 as you say, for compatibility reasons. That resolution is still supported by most LCDs.

    UPDATE

tried uninstalling & reinstalling the driver, still made no difference

Changing the DP lead didnt resolve the issue. Occasionally the display still starts up with a 640x480 res, if i unplug the DP lead from the PC or Monitor end and plug it back in, the display reverts to normal....not sure if this means its amonitor fault.....any ideas please ?

unless itís a monitor fault ???

Still no solution to this, fitted new DP cable, made no difference, reinstalled monitor driver, seemed to be ok for some time, but now have problem 1 in 3 times.....if I unplug the DP cable from behind the monitor and reinsert it, the correct display returns......so do I have a faulty monitor ???thanks
