Hi all,
As in title, desktop looks terrible when using HDR. reds look orange, etc. "washed out" seems to express this phenomenon well. this always happens after boot. turning the monitor off & on fixes the problem, as does opening Display Settings and turning HDR off & on.
Quite annoying - any ideas would be great!

Yes.
You may just be able to use one of the existing profiles (even if they aren't really HDR10 profiles). Or download "drivers" for the monitor.
I've been using a monitor with HDR for about a year. I admit that I understand very little about HDR on the PC. I have the impression that it's not quite ready for prime time in Windows 10.
I generate my own profiles with a hardware/software package from X-Rite i1Display Pro Monitor Calibration Device | X-Rite It's somewhat expensive, though.

Any advice re how to go about choosing a colour profile? There are a lot there and I must admit - it's kind of gobbledygook to me.
Ok so I've done as you suggested - downloaded the color profile for my monitor (Acer XB273K GP) from the Acer website. Unfortunately, that hasn't fixed the issue. Still get that washed out look on the desktop when I start Windows.
It's not a super big deal - it only takes a few seconds to fix, or I can just leave HDR off and turn it on only when I particularly need it. It's just an annoyance really.

One thing to check …
HDR is quite often designed to use a specific setting on the monitor.
The setting controls the bit depth of the actual LED panel, the standard bit depth of the windows screen is 8 Bit but HDR screens are usually 10 Bit or more.
This may not be available automatically from the Driver but I would check the actual monitor user manual to see if you have a higher setting than the standard to handle HDR.
There is also a potential issue depending on the actual output driving the screen - an image that does not have the required Bit Depth will often only show the original colours and the more vibrant ones [High Def], will not show - so you are only using a part of the bandwidth and on some setups you see the original colours spread out to try and fill the Bandwidth.

Not sure if these were the settings you meant, but under Nvidia control panel i changed the option to 'Use Nvidia colour settings' and played around with 'Desktop colour depth' (only option is 'Highest (32-bit)), 'Output colour Depth' ( 8bpc / 10bpc), 'Output colour format' (RGB / YCbCr422 / YCbCr444) and 'Output dynamic range' (Full / Limited). I tried all possible combinations but the issue persists.
I do understand that I could fix this issue by just keeping HDR off until I specifically need it (as mentioned, actual HDR content is 100% fine) - but it's just a minor annoyance activating HDR on both the monitor and in Windows every time I want to play a HDR-supported game, which at the moment is fairly often.
