Correct driver for Intel Graphics 620?

I'm setting up a new-to-me laptop with 7th generation i3-7100U with 620 Graphics, Win10 Pro 2004. Windows Update installed a new graphics driver, 27.20.100.7990 and doesn't want to update it further. What I'm confused about is that Intel doesn't show a version 7990 at all, but does show many newer driver versions. The latest graphics driver provided by HP is several years older than what Windows Update provided. Oh, and the Intel Driver & Support Assistant fails on this machine, so that's no help.
I guess my question is, why would Windows Update be providing a driver that's not available from either HP or Intel, and why would WU not be providing the latest driver from Intel? Is there any reason to think that 7990 is indeed the best currently available driver for my system, rather than a newer version from Intel?

Intel doesn't necessarily push every single update to Windows update unless there is some major new feature / bug fix. Intel tends to come out with updates rather frequently for the display driver, many of them being simply for specific support of new games and minor tweaks such as that.

You can download and install the newer version from Intel if you prefer, but it may not buy you much.

Intel has now gone to DCH drivers whereas your laptop manufacturer doesn't appear have gone that direction. Anyway if you want the latest HP specific drivers you can visit HP's site... or you can decide to go with the Intel DCH drivers.

    See these articles....

Also, be aware that once you choose the DCH drivers, going back to the non-DCH drivers won't be as simple as uninstalling and reinstalling the non-DCH drivers.

Anyway, I'm in the process of deciding whether to go with DCH or stick with Lenovo's non-DCH drivers. With that I would highly suggest you at least read the Intel FAQ's article before deciding which direction to go.

    Hope this helps.

OEM customizations doesn't affect generic DCH driver installations anymore. So just go to Intel's website and install their generic DCH driver.

I also have an HP laptop with 620HD graphics / 7th gen i7. It originally shipped with non-DCH drivers but the latest DCH drivers work flawlessly.

Thanks, that's good to know. Since you have a similar setup, can I ask you about a related topic? I occasionally have very slow SSD access so looked in Device Manager at the IDE Controller and it says "6th Generation Core Processor Family Platform I/O SATA ACHI Controller" where I would have expected 7th Generation. Is it the same on yours?

Sorry, my system has no SATA controller, only NVMe.

Is the "new-to-me laptop" one that did or did not have a clean install?

Yep, clean install from USB. I deleted the existing partitions and let the Windows installer create what it needed.
