Intel HD4400 driver upgrade gave dllhost.exe error message

    What does dllhost.exe do?
I had a problem with an icon randomly displaying on the power director 18 workspace. Cyberlink support got details and then advised me to update the HD4400 driver. Which I did using the control panel device manager\properties\driver update option for that item. Before update, the version was 20.19.15.4531, and after update the last 4 digits changed to 4624. But altho the update was successful, I got an error panel for dllhost.exe. See the attached screenshot.
That error panel would not go away. So I re-booted: message now gone, display seems Ok, PD 18 seems to work better - at least for now.
So - just what does that program dllhost.exe do??

    Currently running windows 10-1909

Latest driver is 5144 , down and install it and hopefully will resolve your problem .
Link : Download Intel(R) Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.40]

As for DLLhost.exe , a software or app comes in two parts , Executable "Exe" which initiate the software and Dynamic Link Libraries "DLL" and those usually hold extra functions the makers of the software / app try to distribute over multiple files sometimes for organisational purpose (So every team of programmers work on a specific part of the program) , or for making it easy to update (one small file to replace verses one huge EXE file) or giving third party programs or apps access / share functions stored inside those DLL (s) (They name such functions available for external third party use API (s) ) , now DLLhost.exe is the windows program acting as a middle man between third party programs and the DLL (s) to call the API (s) , so if it crashes so a main reason might be that it could not find the functions the third party programs try to call or have received an ambiguous response on attempting to call them . So most probably since that driver is older than latest , it may not have the proper API incorporated inside which that the program you are trying to use call , hence why it is crashing .

Another reason why it may crash is Windows corruption , or file infection , so you may need to check these too if updating to latest driver does not fix it for you .

    Hi NM,
Thanks for the link: very up-to-date driver (v 10.19.15.5144 May 2020)
Downloaded, installed. But, not without "issues" (wrong word really, but it just wasn't normal), however no error messages this time.

My prior experience of this driver activity is that it's a "once thru the cycle, including a re-start, and its done" sort of update.
In this case, it seemed to get locked into a continual update activity: after each re-start, the update driver panel came back, looked like it was doing it all over again. there was no obvious advisory about how many starts will be needed in the process. Eventually (cycle 3 or 4?) I turned off the default aero scheme thing (which was a win7 feature), and it still kept presenting the driver install panel after every start. Even tho the device manager/display adapter/HD4400 properties panel showed 5144 installed and working properly. After 5 or 6 cycles I just cancelled out after the re-start and the panel came back again.
    Weird.
Nothing abnormal obvious in display workings . . .

I did that (re-install), paid a lot more attention to the messaging in the Intel panel. But similar results.
The self-extracting driver exe file is saved on a local drive: along with previous versions that definitely did not behave like this.
    So,
    1. install: use explorer to locate the driver file, double click the exe file and then close explorer - took quite a while to give any indication that it was doing anything at all - no activity circle et al. But eventually - half a minute or more - the Intel install panel appears, with notice to close other software.
    2. install, agree etc - various files flash thru the panel and then there is a next button; click it
    3. finish panel - this has a re-start now or re-start later option, AND a message that says when re-starting, click re-start and then remove the install files. That notice seems to assume the new driver software is on a removable drive (eg usb stick) - not intended to be available when the PC starts next.
    4. click re-start now
5 after the windows 10 re-start, that Intel install panel appears again. This time bearing mind the prior notice to remove the update files, and that the install files are locally stored, I simply cancelled out: got an incomplete message and assumed that was the usual result of Cx in the new panel.

Check of control panel/device manager/display adapter/hd4400 properties general and details tabs say the device is working correctly and the driver version is 5144

This "assumption that the driver install files are on a removable drive" seems to be a bit slack of Intel. The related download documentation (on the page your link gets to) is all legalese - there's no How to install section in it, and the release notes pdf document likewise.

these symptoms never happen usually , i think you have some sort of a rogue behavior either caused by a utility you installed or a windows corruption , hopefully you have a good antivirus , also i guess its time to take up the 2020 update , this might clean up the corruption you may have acquired through out the period of last year
