ASUS GT710-SL-1GD5 on ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus mobo with Win 10 Pro

Hi all,

I'm running Windows 10 Pro Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.329) on this CPU - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+. The motherboard is made by ASUSTek and the model is M2N-MX SE Plus. I think the PC is ~12 years old.

When I first ran Win 10 on this PC a couple of years ago, the GeForce 210 (?) card worked fine.When I reloaded Win 10 (which had been running Linux Mint in the interim), the display was almost unusable, so I removed the graphics card and now I'm using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and the built-in graphics - which is ok-ish. But I want to improve the graphics and use the full screen.

Will the ASUS GT710-SL-1GD5 GeForce GT 710 Graphics Card work with my set-up? Does anyone have experience of a similar config?

Given the failure (and previous success) to work with GeForce 210, I can't be 100% confident. But I've ordered the graphics card anyway.

I'll report back when I receive it, which should be tomorrow.

The GeForce 210 is too old and not compatible with Windows 10, while the 710 is a newer series and is compatible with Windows 10.

Are you sure? The latest drivers nVidia recommends are old (2016, Drivers), but I'm not sure that they won't work. Windows requires a DX 9 graphics card or better; the 210 is DX 10.1.

The latest nVidia drivers support the GT 710, so it should be a better choice.

I can't speak to any BIOS issues with an old AMD system like that, but I'd place a small bet (5¢) that it'd work.

I hope that "finnfire" posts back with the results.

Recently I purchased a new license for Win 10 and attempted to install it on the AMD machine. That was when I ran into problems and removed the GeForce 210 card. Why couldn't I use the 210 card on AMD when I'd used it 2 years ago? Had the Win 10 drivers for the card been updated and were the 210 drivers now obsolete? Hence my original post....

I'll post back later today when I get & fit the GT710 card.

It should work, because the latest drivers for Windows 10 are compatible with the GT 710.

PCI-E graphics cards are supposed to be backwards compatible with older motherboards. From what I have read, that's not 100%, though, due to occassional BIOS issues.

The odds are in your favor, fortunately. My only experience was with an AMD laptop with an nVidia motherboard plus a discrete nVidia GPU from 2008. I had a bit of fun getting all of the drivers installed, but I prevailed. I don't recall what the most recent Win10 version I put on it was, though. Haven't used it for a couple of years.
