    Displays turn black momentarily

My wife's PC, which is about 3-4 years old has been running fine after we upgraded to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. This is a general office-level PC, nothing at all flash other than plenty of RAM - 16gb, with integrated graphics & VGA+DVI monitors. Version is probably 1909 Build 18363.836 but can't check as she's working from the live linux ATM, trying to get some work out.

About a week or so, she experienced an odd behaviour when one of her displays went black when she clicked on it. It then was OK on reboot. However, in the last few days, both monitors go black for a moment, then return. Whatever is running in the background - audio, keystrokes etc- carries on and resumes as if nothing happens. You also hear a click from the speakers.
I tried putting in an old graphics card, but it still happens so I put the video cables back on the integrated ports.

I then tried running from a live Linux USB & it is stable, which points the finger at Windows, presumably some update has broken something? Any ideas where to start looking would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

It can be many things but I'll guess it is windows updating a driver ( can be the IG graphics or the monitor driver).
Open Device Manager. Is there any yellow alert of missing driver?

Check cables. Unplug and re-plug. Try different power sockets and/or power board.

Done that - I unplugged them to swap to a graphics card then back. The two monitors plugs are very firmly screwed in - can they really need unscrewing & reattaching? Also bear in mind it was running fine under a live Linux, so how can it be a cable issue?

What power sockets? & what is a power board? Thanks

Device mangler shows the Intel HD 630 graphics to be OK & the date of that driver is May this year.
MS basic display adapter has a warning, but doesn't seem to want to update. I believe this may have been invoked when I put the (very old) graphics card in.
I'll remove the old card as it's redundant & reboot.
    Thanks

I uninstalled the redundant old card & the MS vbasic driver went from the device manager as suspected. The Intel driver has no warning. Nonetheless I went to intel, ran their scan thingy & it says all drivers up to date.

Rebooted into Windows & have just spent an hour or so black-free work, when Blink. It just went again and has done several times in a few minutes. It goes off long enough for the Dell monitor splash screens to appear. As I type this, it is going into a continuous cycle of black then recovering. It's like it's trying to achieve something x number of times then gives up - although the number of times isn't consistent. I'm trying to go through the event logs but haven't seen anything yet.

I could possibly believe it was something getting too hot, other than it doesn't do it under Xubuntu or with a different graphics card.

I've also found that audio is interrupted.

So, it doesn't appear to be the Intel driver, or hardware as it doesn't do it under Linux.

    Any other ideas?
    Thanks.

Referring to "external" power connections, at both ends (computer and power supply). Power board - this type of thing ...

However this latter bit of info might rule out a faulty cable or a loose external power connection

"when one of her displays went black"
Does it happens only in one display?

You say it has a i3 CPU. Can you find out witch one you have?
Use HWiNFO. Don't need to install. Extract and run.

Intermittent problems are difficult to find out. It's worst if it doesn't leave traces.

    repeated black screens

    Megahertz,
Thanks - yes it's both screens. I looked through a few hopeful-looking event logs, but nothing and there are sooo many logs...

I fully uninstalled the graphics driver and reinstalled it and for all of yesterday evening, it was stable. However, whilst writing this - my wife just turned her PC on and it's started going black again and in fact won't come back. I'm just uninstalling the driver again to see if it will give a few hours stability so she can keep working, but Plan B is to uninstall windows and reinstall it when I've got my own work out. That is really the last thing I want to do.

I asked what is your i3 CPU because the GPU is on it.
It can be 5xx or 6xx series. Then I suggest you to go to Intel site and download their latest driver.

Please find out the i3 model ID.
