I'm working on a computer now that usually has 2 monitors connected, both on DVI with VGA adapters [don't know why, client's desire] and it seems to make a difference which port on the video card is used, one port takes priority over the other. It's easy for me to notice as one monitor is wide-screen and the other is not.

    Too much argument! :)

Anyway, if I understand the OP correctly ... Windows is numbering his screens "wrong".
    Here's mine:
    Possible to re-assign monitor identities/numbers?-display.jpg
Display #2 on the left is my "main" screen, the one with the start button and task bar.
Why is that? It would make sense to call that #1, and other #2.
But I can't find a way to change it.

    IS THAT YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION?
If so, I can see why you refer to it as a "cosmetic" problem, not a "functional" problem.

Maybe, just maybe this could be "fixed" by swapping the cables on the graphics card?

Mine is a GTX 1060 with an HDMI port, a DVI port, and three Display Port connections.

I'm using the HDMI for one display, and a Display Port (with HDMI adapter cable) for the other.

If I swap those will that "fix" the problem? I don't know. (But I also don't care.) :)

No. The HDMI will be the dominate port. It works that way whether you use VGA, or DVI, as the "other" monitor. THAT'S the problem. It's the way the ports are configured. Like tsunami said, it's coded that way. F/W.

    Interesting.

That brings to mind my former computer. It had an ATI HD-5770 with dual DVI ports.
I had three monitors, but just two were used at any one time: two monitors on the desk, and the third nearby at an alternate table position.

I had a VGA switch so that the "main" Windows screen could be switched from the desk-based monitor to the third/alternate monitor.
The second monitor on the desk was always live, connected via DVI.

Well ... the driver (or Windows 7 ?) wouldn't allow that! If you use one monitor on VGA and the other on DVI, the DVI monitor was dominant. It HAD TO SHOW the main windows screen. Since my switch was on the VGA connection, that screen was the "second" screen. No good!

That problem did not exist if BOTH monitors were on VGA, or if both were on DVI. But I didn't own a DVI switch. I only had a VGA switch.

So I looked for a DVI switch. They were crazy-priced at $150 at the time (around 2013). So instead I just changed the second desk-based monitor to VGA (using a DVI/VGA adapter on the graphics card socket). With both monitors on VGA I could make either one the "main" screen. Solved.

I think it rather sucks that the card (or the driver) forces such things.

BTW, I have the same three-monitor setup now, but with a new Win 10 desktop. This one has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 3 Display Ports. I can make either monitor the "main" screen, so no worries.

As far as I know its a function of the Video card. If I have one monitor plugged in it is 1, regardless of what port it's plugged into. Plug a second monitor in and it may change to 2 and the one I just connected becomes 1. It all depends on what ports are in use. Plug a third monitor in and they could all cycle again, or not change. Depending on what monitor is plugged into what port. If I remember correctly, with three monitors plugged in the monitor plugged into my HDMI is 1 and the DVI are 2 and 3. I'm on my laptop at the moment. It shows my laptops built in display as 1 and my USB displaylink as 2.

Can someone explain why I should care about the screen numbers?
I do care about screen POSITIONS. I want the main screen left, and the other right.
But I only see the screen NUMBERS when I look at that control panel screen ... which is almost never.
So why would I be concerned about those numbers? Please explain.

Kind of wondering the same thing? It's never ever been an issue for me. I can set what ever monitor I want as my main monitor, regardless of what number it has.
It's obviously an issue for some, or this thread wouldn't be here.
