The downside to using it as a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is that
    - it may not have the high resolution that your full adapter has, and
    - it may not allow sleep / hibernation.

If you leave any further changes for a week then at least you could be certain that the Intel driver has been the problem.

So I should wait a bit longer? I've already tried two versions of the Intel driver. Is it worth trying an even earlier version?
Would a clean install of Windows help?

    Sam,

I was just responding to your last post; I was not objecting to your staying with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. If you do not mind those two potential shortcomings then just stick with that.

I cannot recommend a clean install because, if the problem is caused by drivers, you'll end up in the same state as you are now.

If you make a system image then you can experiment with other drivers as much as you like. But if you are satisfied with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter then there would be little point bothering.

There is not necessarily any solution. For all we know, the problem might be caused by the combination of your bios, Windows updates & Intel drivers rather than just one of them.
    - How old is this computer?
    - Does Asus still produce bios & driver updates for it?
    - Does Asus have user forums you could search / post in?

I have a computer with the same fault as yours. Every few days, it decides to sit there with a blank screen refusing to respond to anything but with fans running & power lights on. I have tried the same things you have. Since this computer is ten years old, I decided just to accept the problem. I reboot at least once every day and this lets me avoid the problem for longer periods - I think it is now two weeks since its last sulk.
